

Windell Scruggs, 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Marlin on Wed., Oct.17, 2012. A private burial service was held at Hillcrest Cemetery. Celebration of his life was at the First United Methodist Church in Marlin officiated by Jeff Watkins and Rev. Joe Sandifer.
Windell was the oldest of two born to Alberta Wilson Scruggs and Berry Finch Scruggs. His sister, LaDell Eddleman, has deceased. He served honorably in the US Navy as Chief Petty Officer during World War II graduating with honors from the Naval Academy and receiving seven major battle stars and the Admiral’s Citation for bravery in the battle of Okinawa.
At 36, he was the youngest president of a National Bank in Texas. He served on the President’s Council for banking for two years during Lyndon B. Johnson’s term. He was past president and chairman of many banking organizations including a founder, National Director and third president of the Texas Independent Bankers Association and President of the National Association of Bank Auditors and Comptrollers. He was voted outstanding Banker of the Year in 1985.
Windell lead and promoted Falls County agricultural and industrial development for years. He was a founder and chairman of the Marlin Public Housing Authority, organizer of Tex-Best Turkey Co-Op, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Red Cross, President of the Board and trustee and financial advisor to Torbett, Hutchens, Smith Memorial Hospital, President of Easter Seal Society, President of United Fund and former director of Falconer Community Center.
Windell is survived by his wife Doris (Walter) Scruggs, daughters Beth Scruggs of Marlin and Connie Gustafson of Dallas, five grandchildren, Daniel Scruggs and Chelsie Gustafson of Los Angeles, Ca., Kelly Scruggs of Marlin, Jodi Guitzkow and husband Lorne of Marlin, Marlin Scruggs of Dallas and four great grandchildren Logan and Larson Guitzkow and Donavon and Donisha Blakes of Marlin.
Windell was preceded in death by his son Phillip, Phillip’s wife Donna, and his granddaughter Wendi (Scruggs) Blakes.
