When I started training as a Veterans Assistance Counselor for the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs in 2000, Dave was my mentor for the Chalmette, St. Bernard Parish, and Port Sulphur,   Plaquermines Parish offices.  Dave was truly devoted to providing Veterans the assistance they needed to apply for deserve benefits from the Federal Veterans Administration.  We became fast friends and his assistance made me a better counselor.  Dave ran the office in Gretna, LA .  Later, because of his breathe of knowledge and personality, He was promoted as the Southeast Regional Manager for the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs.  Dave will be sorely missed and I am sorry I missed his passing as I discovered his death today on his Birthday, December 22, 2019.  Dave and I were service connected as members of the Department of the Navy: Dave Naval Service and me Marine Corps. . .Ooh Rah for Dave's life!

I was shocked to learn of Dave's passing.  I have had the honor to know Dave through the Sons of Confederate Veterans for over 24 years and his devotion to the veterans he worked so hard for.  Dave was the kind of man you would want to be in the foxhole if things went bad.  You could always count on him.  Always.  He loved the South, its history, its rich heritage and never shied away from doing what was right.

RIP my dear friend.  You are and will be missed.  My condolences to Peggy and the rest of Dave's family.

Dave was my life and my sole mate
This is one  memory  I don’t think I will ever forget.

One night Dave was listing to his music 
with his head phones on and as I was passing by he took my hand and said dance with me I smiled and said what he looked me in the eye and said it again and added a pease with it.
He restarted the song took ofc the head phones.
And 
Your we danced right there in the kitchen it might not have been a dance floor but it was one of the most romantic things he had ever done.

WOW!!! Never thought I would be writing a favorite remembrance of Dave...there were so many. I met Dave through the JCOA Seniors training program. I was assigned to work at his office and loved every minute!! Dave took a lot of pride in his work. He had a big heart and expressed genuine care and concern for his staff. He loved his family. He was so funny and could tell stories that would really make you laugh. I always enjoyed our conversations because we could talk about anything. We stayed in touch when my session ended. He tried his best to help me find another job. Whenever I stopped by, our parting words would be "we have to do lunch"; unfortunately we never got around to it. I will certainly miss my friend, our conversations and the many laughs we shared.

Dave was a good man who will be missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched. I will always remember his happy smile, his warm greetings to "Miss Ginger" and his big hugs.  He was always more than willing to offer help whenever needed, and I will never forget his help with Kathleen's  multiple moves and the time he came to Mandeville to help me. He was a wonderful husband, a loving family man and a dear friend who always brought us smiles - and even Tigers can appreciate his love for the Crimson Tide. 

We are saddened by the sudden passing of our dear friend Dave. He had a true southern sense of humor and was a great host no matter the occasion.

It was with shock and sadness that I learned of Dave's passing. Our several monthly outings were a high point to look forward to.  He was a friend that was always there, no matter the circumstance. A friend indeed, who will be sorely missed.

Words cannot express the loss many of us will feel, when we reach for the phone, only to realize he won't be answering our call. But the memories endure forever, and for that I am eternally grateful.

Peace and Joy on your new journey my friend.

Dave had a big heart. When he called you friend, he would be there for you no matter what. I know he is watching over Peggy and the boys now, just as he did in life. Rest easy my friend, you are truly missed.

I worked for David while in college. Working for David was such a joy he was the best supervisor! He always looked out
for his staff and made sure that veterans got the benefits they deserved. I will truly miss all the laughs and good times! He was such a great honest and loving person! My favorite line he would say would be hearing him call some one a dingle berry! Never heard of a dingle berry before I met David.

David was great supervisor to me. He always helped his Veterans and their family. Also, he helped me and my family with VA benefits. He always taught to to be honest and straight to people.  I miss the phone conversations and office conversations talking about everything under the sun. I miss David so much. 

Dave was an amazing husband, father and grandfather to my boys, and we didn’t get enough time with him. He stepped right into the role of grandpa and loved my boys from day one,  and they loved him just as much. There is a hole in our hearts that will never be filled, and he will be missed so much.  We love you paw-paw Dave!

My first real memory of Dave was when I applied for the Regional Managers position with the LDVA, he was one of the interviewers.  I became immediately aware of his knowledge and love for his fellow veterans during the interview process.  He really gave me a desire to  want to desire to learn from this gentleman.  After I was hired for the position, we became friends and he was available to help me with anything that would come up.  Sometimes he even would call me just to talk about things and get my take or view on something.  I also remember how dedicated he was in helping the people that worked in his territory, always praising them at our meetings and always insuring if an issue came up that he investigated it from both sides to insure that his group received a fair evaluation of the situation at hand.  Very impressive how he handled his work and his employees.  Excellent teacher and mentor.  I will miss our talks and just being with him at our meetings.  He and I would talk about our upcoming retirement plans, I think he exceeded his now.  Peggy we will keep you in our prayers and hope you that the void you feel in your life is filled with the presence of our Lord  Jesus Christ each and every day.   Sincerely Bruce Parker

Oh goodness what can I say about my Uncle David. He was so loving and protective. I had so much fun watching the reinactment him and my nanny did and oh The BEST stories ever he told. One of my favorites was the Wal Mart parking lot incident I died laughing and still laugh till this day. I love you Uncle David and I am forever grateful my nanny found a man as wonderful as you to watch over her and make sure no one could ever hurt her again. You are the best Uncle and I love and miss you so much. I keep eye on nanny for ya don’t worry.  I love you. 

I remember the first time I met David was when David and Peggy were getting married.  All the way from Fort Payne, Al.   He was so much fun to be around and made me feel so welcome. He loved his hometown in Alabama.  He loved the videos I would Facebook of Fort Payne. He would say that made me want to cry. From one Roll Tide fan to another Roll Tide Roll David Holcomb.

Fair winds and following seas shipmate! See you on the other side! He was always joyful and happy and I never heard him speak unkindly of anyone.  I am sure he is wearing a very large crown with a lot of beautiful jewels in the Holy Land. 

What I will remember and what I will miss the most is his laugh, He used to crack me up when he decided it was time to let go with that laugh of his.  Tears would be rolling down his face and he would just go with it, Everyone around know when he thought something was funny.. Miss you brother, thank you so much for being a part of my life.  Fair winds my friend.. 

I was never real close to Dave, in fact it has been years since I talked to him, something I regret as there was a many a laugh we had together at the Pleasant Hill Reenactment. I mainly got to know him when I got started in CW reenacting under Jimmy Moore's tutelage.  I remember when I was in high school he was chuck full of life lessons, and stories to make sure he got his point across. One of the most humiliating jokes ever played on me was by him when I told him some stupid Jewish joke I had heard in school, and thought he may like. He liked tricking me into telling it to a real nice Jewish gentleman much more. A lesson I've never forgotten was learned that day, and I was never able to get back at him. 

The Pleasant Hill reenactment alone has never seemed right without him, Jimmy Moore and others sitting over in their camp guarding the best parking lot at that event. Even when it would pour down rain in some of the worst storms I ever seen with us drenched, he was still laughing and telling jokes, saying it didn't bug him because he had spent so many years  in the Navy.

His passing is a loss to anyone that knew him, and Lord knows he touched enough lives to ensure he'll never be forgotten. 

I will remember, Dave, to be the best Supervisor anyone could hope for,  he cared about the people who worked for him.  I would always tell him that I felt this way, I am so happy that I did.  My heart is broken and I will remember him always.  Ms. Peggy my family and I send to you and your family, our condolences.

David and I served in the navy together. Always energetic and a willing and able sailor. It was my pleasure to have known and to have worked with him.  A true friend that will be missed by many.

Peggy, I worked with Dave through our Baton Rouge headquarters.  When I first started at the department, Dave was a tough nut to crack.  However, over time, he became a marshmallow.  He was so dedicated to his offices and their employees, always willing to go out of his way to make sure they had what they needed to support our veterans.  He was always quick to send me an email of thanks when I helped him out, and it was always so appreciated.  I had a good visit with him when he was in the office about two weeks before he passed away.  I will miss him...and his emails.  My prayers are with you and your family.

I had invited Dave over to my house for a barbeque last year. We smoked some brisket, broiled some ribs and grilled some chicken. Well, a couple of days after the barbeque Dave calls me up and tells me that I have to pick up a copy of “Smokin” by Myron Mixon, though I’m pretty sure he just called it “Smoke.” Now, I take a little pride in my smoking abilities, but Dave assured me that I had to get the book because Myron was the best in the business and that my smoke would soon become the best tasting barbeque around. He swore it! Now, I thought I may already have the book somewhere in the house and started looking for it. Every time Dave would talk to me he’d ask if I’d found the book and, when I informed him I hadn’t, he would tell me I would have to buy it… BEST BARBEQUE EVER!!! I finally found the book I thought was “Smoking,” but it wasn’t. It was a completely different book. I called Dave to let him know that I didn’t have it, but that I was going to buy it and asked him what his favorite recipe was in the book. I came to find out that, after months of hounding me,  Dave hadn’t actually used it to cook yet. He was just certain that Myron Mixon couldn’t go wrong because Dave enjoyed watching him so much on TV. I still haven’t bought the book yet, but I think, since I’ve started watching BBQ Pitmasters on Dave’s high recommendation, I may have to get that stupid book now.

Dave was a true and faithful son of of the South. He and I shared our love of our southern heritage many times. All friends of The Confederate States of America have truly lost a great friend and he will greatly missed.

Dave and I had some great adventures together when it came to defending Southern heritage. We always used to laugh about the time we attended a talk by Morris Dees (Southern Poverty Law Center) at Tulane, making sure we "chowed down" at the reception they held for him beforehand, then passing out literature after the event that exposed him for the race pimping charlatan he was. We faced down the enemy alone that night, but we had a great time doing it. We also almost both got arrested when we marched in the Mobile Veteran's parade - against the wishes of the local gendarmes.  We carried our flags proudly that day. Dave was never one to back down from a fight when it was something he believed in. I'll miss you, Dave - you've crossed the river and are resting under the shade of the trees with Roger.  The "mud-sills" will never plague you again.

To a great friend and neighbor that will truly be missed, we had good laughs and stories about navy times.

David will be missed by us all at Camp Moore Confederate Museum and Cemetery.  David was a long serving member of our Board of Directors and a volunteer at the Museum.  
The Reenacting Community will be mourning the loss of a good friend and companion.  
The Board of Camp Moore will miss him and all of the dedication and work he did for, and with us.
We all share our most heartfelt prayers and thoughts for him and his family.

Lord, we ask You to send Your peace to the people who are mourning. Please surround them with family, friends and loved ones.  Provide them with Your comfort.  Help them to put their trust in You.  In your name we pray.

Dave was a good friend to both Roger and me for many years.   He will be missed!   I’m sure he and Roger are now plotting with Robert E Lee on how to take back the  South as they drink good bourbon!
