Emma Mary “Sister” Dufrene Fabre passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at West Jefferson Hospital with three of her daughters physically by her side and her angel, Sheron. She succumbed to a two week battle with pneumonia, where she fought a brave fight! She was born on March 1, 1922 in Bayou Perot, Louisiana. She was a lifelong resident of Barataria and was preceded in death by her parents, Louisa Barry and Adam Felix Dufrene, Sr. She was the sister (hence the nickname “Sister”) of the late Walter Dufrene (Amelia), the late Robert Dufrene (Ella), the late Adam Dufrene, Jr (Eugenia), and the late Thomas Dufrene. Sister was married to the late Norbert Felix Fabre with whom she had four wonderful daughters - Antoinette Fabre Matherne (Michael), the late Sheron Ann Fabre (A.J.), Rhonda Fabre Danos (Gordon Sr), and Norma Fabre Hatty (Paul). “Grams” is what Sister was referred to by all of her grandchildren. Grams is survived by twelve grandchildren: Robert (Bobby) Hale, Jr. (Tammy), Lynette Hale Morein, Norbert Fabre (Stacey), Yvette Fabre Burns (Merle), Jason Fabre (Jonie), Jacob Fabre (Lacy), Alton Fabre III (Albert), Gordon Danos Jr. (Brandy), Gavin Danos (Amy), Claire Hatty Crye (Donnie), Jenna Hatty Crousillac (Aaron), and Paul Hatty, Jr. (Courtney). Thirteen Great Grandchildren: Dwayne Morein (Jessica), Jordan Hale Bowers (Justin), Lauren Hale, Sydney Hale, Trey Olano, Norbert Fabre, Jr., Scottie Fabre, Holden Fabre, Jade Fabre, Jase Fabre, Linden Crye, Nolan Crye, Benjamin Crousillac, Dane Schneider, Chad Martin, Maegan Martin, Lane Martin, Alaina Martin, Scottie Schouest, and Joston Sidney Fabre (deceased). Three Great Great Grandchidren: Emma Bowers, James Morein and Emmaleigh Morein. Nieces & Nephews: Irene Lemen (Billy), Hilton Dufrene (Janette), Milton Dufrene (Gwen), the late Sylvia Carter (Butch), Bernadette Falcon (Charlie), Eric Dufrene (Merita), Carl Dufrene (Kim), and Carmelita Bourgeois (Kurt). She is also survived by a host of great nieces and great nephews, including Ronald “Jug” Dufrene, Sr. (Jan), with whom she was very close. She was also a loving Godmother of Hilton Dufrene and the late Larry Matherne. Sister was the matriarch of her family. She always had something on the stove, coffee in the pot, and the door was always open. In addition to raising her own children, she was also the caretaker of most of her grandchildren and many of their children. Family was most important to her and it’s how she lived her life. She was there for the birth of nearly every grandchild and for all three great great grandchildren. She got around better than most in her later years with the help of her “hot wheels” walker. We often joked that she would get to the car before any of us if there was somewhere to go. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, her soaps, playing cards, country music (especially George Strait) and any event surrounding any of her host of family members. She wouldn’t miss a graduation, grandparent’s day, wedding, birth, christening – she was always there – with a smile on her face and always happy to see you! A very special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of West Jefferson Hospital who were so kind and compassionate to Sister and all of her family. They showed understanding and unparalleled empathy during such a difficult time. They took great care of Grams and made her as comfortable as possible. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial from ST. ANTHONY CATHOLIC CHURCH, Lafitte, on Monday morning, December 8, 2014 at 11:00. Visitation will be held at Westside Leitz-Eagan on Sunday evening from 6:00 until 11:00, and again on Monday morning from 8:00 until 10:00. Interment will follow in St. Pius X Cemetery, Crown Point.
