Linton Bernard Bergeron, Sr. departed this life on Friday, November 5, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 93. He was born on June 27, 1928 to the late Alfred Camille and Lydia Nicholas Bergeron. Linton was the loving husband of Earline Rita Babin for nearly 70 years. Father of Geralyn Laiche (Michael), Linton Bergeron, Jr. (Melinda), Jill Schmill (Kenny), Laurie Nichols (Jeff), Ritney Bergeron, Sr. (Jaida) and the late Perry Bergeron (Robin). He was the proud grandfather of 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Brother of Shirley Dufrene (the late Andrew), Betty Champagne (the late Wiltz), Douglas Bergeron, Sr. (Brenda) and the late Lorraine Bergeron, Martha Champagne (the late Eddie), Gloria Troxler (the late Leander), Barbara Tyree (the late Richard), and Alfred “Sonny Boy” Bergeron. Linton is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Linton was born and raised in Luling Louisiana and joined in the United Sates Navy in 1946. While in the Navy, Linton served honorably in the Korean war as a ship’s mechanic/machinist. Upon returning from Korea, Linton wed the love of his life, Earline, and together, they raised and enjoyed a large family of six loving children. After retiring from the navy in 1951 Linton joined the Shell Chemical Company in 1952 where he retired as a senior mechanic/machinist in 1985.
Linton enjoyed family life, faithfully attending and serving in church, hunting, fishing, camping, and working on projects in “the shop”. Linton harvested many species of wildlife and enjoyed making a great meal for friends and family from the bounty. It was a great experience when you went to a celebration at the Bergeron family home.
Linton was known for his expertise as a mechanic/machinist and his ability to fix anything for his family and friends. If a manufactured part was needed and not available or affordable Linton was known as the guy that could improvise a way to fix it. When serving in the navy, Linton received an accommodation for his ability to repair critical ship components through devising ways to use materials on hand when replacement parts were not available. After retiring from Shell, Linton built a beautiful 1941 Jaguar SS100 replication car from the frame up that is still enjoyed to this day by his friends and family.
He loved playing tricks on people and at times used low voltage electricity to “jolt” his friends for a laugh. During his youth Linton (enjoying a good laugh) decided that it would be fun to “grease up” his younger brother’s body with a grease gun which included grease on “all” body parts.
Never wavering from his commitment to God and country, Linton was an honored lifetime member of the VFW post 3750 where he unselfishly donated his time and efforts participating in post events. Linton also served in the Boy Scouts of America as a scout leader teaching young people human values, leadership and survival skills .
The words written here could never express a life so wonderful and fulfilled than Linton’s, a loving father, devoted husband and a friend to all. He will be dearly remembered and forever missed.
The family wishes to thank HEART OF HOSPICE, family that provided for his care, the CHURCH for their prayers, and everyone for their kind expressions of sympathy.
A visitation for Linton will be held Wednesday, November 10, 2021 beginning at 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, 1 Rectory Lane, Hahnville. A funeral mass will begin at 11:00 AM and the committal service immediately follow at St. Charles Cemetery, 1279 Paul Mallard Road, Luling.
