Curtis Dale Oglesby was born in Augusta, Georgia on March 17, 1956, to Tom and Jean Oglesby. He peacefully entered rest on August 19, 2023, at his Martinez, Georgia home surrounded by his loving family.
Curt was an intelligent, athletic, talented, loving, generous, witty, and determined man. He never married but was dearly loved; never had children but his nieces and nephews adored him; never walked again but traveled, volunteered to improve the lives of others; continued his education; and never ever lost his determination to find a solution to whatever obstacles he and his family faced.
He enjoyed watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, playing baseball, attending ball games; knowing local history, people watching at the Savannah River Lock and Dam Park, going to the beach with his family, playing cards and backgammon. He had a very dry humor and usually offered suggestions with his calm wit. He was dubbed by Augusta Chronicle as a “long hair flying” pitcher for Evans High School. Undeniably, he was a good brother.
In 1979, Curt earned a BS degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. GA Tech was the only college he applied to. On May 19, 1979, he injured his third and fourth vertebrae horsing around during the Chattahoochee River Raft Race in Atlanta. He was transported to Sheppard Center in Atlanta and rehabilitated at Craig in Englewood, Colorado where he built strength and began using a hand-powered wheelchair. Our mother never left his side and daddy traveled to Atlanta every weekend.
He began his career in the public works division in the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Gordon. In 1989, he obtained his professional engineering (P.E.) license. For many years, Curt’s coworkers transported him to work and card games; however, he bought a van and had it converted allowing him to drive independently. Returning to school in 1999 he completed his MBA at Augusta University. Thus, allowing for promotions and eventually retiring as the Director of Public Works with a total of thirty-six years in civil service. He was instrumental in building new housing and closing/rerouting roads on Fort Gordon’s campus to give it a more academic environment for our soldiers.
Curt was one of the founding members of Walton Options for Independent Living and served as their Board Chair between 2001-2005. Even though he was intensely private, he positively influenced individuals around him.
Curtis is preceded in death by his parents H.T. (Tom) and N. Jean Livington Oglesby.
He is survived by his sisters Sharon Johnson (Brian), Donna Leone (Steve) and a brother Ken Oglesby (Ruth); five nieces; five nephews; two great nieces and three great nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Hephzibah Baptist Church 2527 Georgia Hwy 88, Hephzibah, Ga Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 11am. A visitation will be held one hour prior in the church’s fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers please consider donating to Walton Options for Independent Living, 948 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30901.
