Douglas Malcolm Davis entered into rest on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. He was the son of the late Robert (“Bob”) Theodore Davis and the late Oletha Mae (Griffith) Davis, and is survived by his sister Shelley Edith (Davis) Patterson (William/“Bill”) of Grovetown, GA.
Doug was born November 18, 1950 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, where the family lived until 1961. Piano lessons began at age 9; cornet lessons followed at age 10. A move to Whitehall, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus, came about in 1961. In 1964 father Bob was transferred to St. Louis, Missouri. Doug called the suburb of Florissant home from then until June of this year. This summer he moved to Augusta, Georgia to be closer to Shelley.
A 1968 graduate of McCluer High School in Florissant, he played the cornet in the band and was selected for the National Honor Society. Perhaps his most interesting summer job was during the summer of 1969 when he worked for Container Corporation of America in Ft. Wayne, a firm that manufactured corrugated boxes. Doug then attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, graduating in 1972 with a B.A. in political science. He began his career in the commercial e-mail section at Western Union, then was transferred to AT&T in 1990 when they bought out the former's electronic mail and Telex businesses. After retiring, he devotedly helped care for his parents.
Doug enjoyed swimming and playing tennis growing up. A sports fan, Mizzou football and basketball teams were his favorites. He never thought Mizzou would someday be a member of the SEC! Over the years he rooted for the St. Louis Cardinals (both baseball and football), the Blues, and the Rams. Later he developed an interest in walking and in following soccer. Two beloved English springer spaniels, Bentley and Riley, were his companions for many years.
After a graveside service, he will be interred in the Lindenwood Cemetery in Ft. Wayne in the Griffith family plot. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of St. Louis, the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Arts and Sciences, or the Nature Conservancy, to be used for projects within the state of Missouri.
