

Sam was born August 30, 1957, in Ridgway, Pennsylvania. He was highly educated in Golf Course Management. He graduated from Penn State University in University Park, PA with a degree in Turfgrass Management. He also, graduated from Lake City Community College in Florida as a Certified Turfgrass Equipment Technician, and he was part of the GCSAA Continuing Education Program Professional Development Initiative. Sam was a dedicated worker as a Golf Course Superintendent and a Director of Operations for multiple golf courses throughout his career. Most recently, he served as Senior Project Manager of Golf Course Services Inc. Sam also gave freely of his time serving as an avid volunteer worker at the US Open, US Amateur, PGA, and Masters. His favorite tournament was the Masters where he was a Greens Keeper for the past 35 years. Sam was also very active in many groups such as the USGA, GCSAA, and Georgia GCSA, he was also a member of the Penn Turfgrass Council. He was a Certified Pesticide Applicator in SC, NC, GA and NY. Sam was member of the Audubon Society of NY as well as a member of the Elks in Warren PA. Of all Sam’s many attributes his greatest trait was being a wonderful person, always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need, he kept a smile on his face and loved to laugh and enjoyed all types of music. Sam loved having gatherings of friends and family especially gatherings to watch his favorite football team the Pittsburg Steelers. Sam thoroughly enjoyed life to the fullest, never resting, he loved being on the go, experiencing all life has to offer. Above all else though, he was a loving family man and father. He married his wife Susan in 2010, they have one child together, Sammy. He also has two daughters Mandy and Alex. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. The family wishes to thank all the patrons and employees of the Waffle House on Lewiston Road and all the doctors and nurses who diligently worked to help Sam at Doctor’s Hospital ICU.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Powers Murphy, Sr. and Helen Murphy; and brother, Billy Murphy. Survivors include, his loving wife, Susan Moore Murphy; children, Samuel “Sammy” Powers Murphy III, Mandy Murphy Atwell (Chandler) and Alex Murphy; Siblings and Spouses (Nieces/Nephews), Tim and Terri Murphy (Christopher, Colleen and Kim), Becky and Bill Dahl (Ashlee), Pat and Jane Murphy (Megan, Katy), Sharon Miller (Cody) and the late Billy Murphy (Sean, Blair, Anna) and many great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at Elliott Sons Funeral Home on Columbia Road. Funeral services will be held at 3pm on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at the Columbia Road Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home. Funeral service is casual. Wear black, gold, and any Steelers attire.
