
Suzanne Lee Sinsheimer Shapiro passed away on Friday, April, 25, 2014 at her home. A native of Washington, D.C., she attended schools in Richmond County from grades 2 through 12 having graduated in 1959 from the Academy of Richmond County. She attended the Junior College of Augusta, now known as Georgia Regents University. Following her marriage, she and her husband, Harold, lived in Washington, D.C. before moving back to Augusta in 1972. She retired after 32 years as Temple Administrator of Congregation of Children of Israel, and with health permitting, worked in the office at least one day a week when able to. One of her proudest moments in her professional life was being a presenter on the topic of Synagogue Management at a Regional URJ Biennial Convention. She was very active in the Congregation's Sisterhood, holding many positions and was named its "Woman of the Year" in 1985. In addition, she helped fund-raise for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Her life was dedicated to her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. She was an inspiration to so many during her courageous battle with Lymphoma. She was an advocate for those fighting blood cancers and tried her best to be supportive when called upon.
Suzanne was the daughter of the late Lee and Maurice Sinsheimer. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Harold, and their 3 children: Michael (Suzanne Wakefield) Shapiro of Atlanta, Philip Shapiro of Augusta, and Bruce (Ashley) Shapiro and grandchildren, Sidney & Eva of Waynesville, NC, brothers, Paul (Vera) Sinsheimer of Houston, TX, Robert (Cathy) Sinsheimer of Washington, D.C., and her sister, Lynne (Fred) Spector of Savannah, nieces: Kimberly Alkhas, of Cardiff by the Sea, CA, Leah Sinsheimer Misemer of Madison, WI, Emily Sinsheimer, Brooklyn, NY, Sammi Sinsheimer of Washington, DC, Lisa Spector of Houston, TX, and Julie Spector Sprague of Fremont, CA.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 11am at Westover Memorial Park with Rabbi Robert Klensin officiating. Pallbearers will be David Alalof, Meryl Alalof, Jack Goldenberg, Marc Gottlieb, Elliot Price, Jon Simowitz, Nathan Jolles, and Diane Solursh. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Anand Jillella, Isaac Jolles, Lou Scharff, and Mort Wittenberg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Endowment Fund of Congregation of Israel, 3005 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30909 or to The Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Georgia Chapter, 3175 Northside Parkway, Bldg 400, Suite 300, Atlanta, GA, 30327.
