

George Edward Baker, formerly of Williamsport, MD and Palm Beach Gardens, FL passed away on March 6, 2025. He had multiple nicknames which he preferred to George - Sonny, Bake (which he and his brother, Ronnie, shared) and Archie.
He was born on February 26, 1933 in Lydia (St. James), MD to the late George Ronald Baker and Alice Isabel Finafrock Baker.
George was a 1951 graduate of Williamsport High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for four years and had the experience of visiting 56 countries. He talked about his service and the countries he visited for the rest of his life. After his service, he returned home to Maryland where he attended Hagerstown Junior College and Shepherd College attaining a Bachelor's Degree while simultaneously working full time for MCI-H. After his graduation, he went into the field of Education where he remained the rest of his professional life. In Carroll County Public Schools he was a teacher, assistant principal and, after earning a master’s degree from Western Maryland College, transportation director. He was transportation director for Montgomery County Public Schools from 1967 until his retirement in 1980. He then relocated to Palm Beach Gardens, FL where he was transportation director for the Palm Beach County School District until his second retirement in 1996. He loved Florida and didn’t want to return to cold weather and long pants until his health made it imperative for him to be around family.
Playing and watching multiple sports were a large part of George’s life, beginning in his youth. Some of his fondest memories were of playing baseball with his brother. As an adult, he continued to play and coach organized softball and soccer into his 40s, and he golfed into his 70s. One of his golfing highlights was making a hole in one at Indian Trail Country Club, FL in 1984.
He is survived by his daughter, Julie Baker; his son, Jeb Baker; grandchildren, Holly, Stuart, Jack and Susan Baker; sister-in-law Norma Baker; nieces, Beth Baker Ferree and Lori Crawford; nephews, Lance Baker, Ken Wallace and Brian Wallace. He had many good friends in various states who he kept in touch with until a few months ago.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June “Moonie” Baker, and his brother, Ronald “Bake” Baker.
George requested there be no service.
