Rose was born on April 4th, 1939, in Pittsburgh, PA to Mildren McCudden. As a teen, she lived with her Aunt Martha and Uncle Sam in Scottdale, PA. At the age of 18, Rose bravely moved to Washington, DC to work as a secretary for the CIA. She met the love of her life shortly after and was married to Robert C. Hughes (Bob) on October 11, 1958. Together they shared a remarkable 65 years of marriage. They settled in Bethesda, Maryland, where they raised their large family of 7 children. Rose loved being a mother and enjoyed having an open-door policy for all the neighborhood children as well. Once the children were grown, they lived in several more areas. They first moved to Gaithersburg, Maryland, then to their dream home in Haymarket, VA, where Rose grew to love the game of golf. Once Bob retired, they relocated to Ocean View, DE, where they made great friendships, continued with golf, and learned the game of Bocce ball.
Rose’s vibrant and witty spirit shone through in her love for family gatherings and holidays. She spent many years on the sidelines supporting and encouraging her children on the sports fields. Rose had a great passion for golf and was a force to be reckoned with. She had the privilege of playing on many top-notch courses within the country as well as in Ireland and Scotland. Rose loved to travel. A particularly memorable journey for Rose was a trip to Ireland, where they stayed in various castles and immersed themselves in the rich history of the land. She also loved dancing, computer games, and bingo, always engaging in these activities with enthusiasm and joy.
Rose is survived by her husband, Robert C. Hughes, and their children: Kevin Hughes (Sonya), Karen Hughes, Kelly Stodter (Mark), Kathy Wisda (Tim), Kerry Hughes (Tracy), and Kasey Hughes (Sherry). She was a proud grandmother to Kris Wisda (Jill), John Stodter, Ashley Hartley (Conner), Brittany Clark (Zach), Sarah Hughes, Casey Stodter, Connor Hughes, Shannon Hughes, and Megan Hughes. Her legacy extends further with her great-grandchildren: McKinley and Ensley Clark, Kamdyn and Keaghan Wisda, and Hugh Hartley.
Rose was preceded in death by her son, Kris Hughes, who passed away on September 7, 1987.
Rose’s life was also blessed with several beloved dogs. Patrick and Louie were her much loved black standard poodles that provided comfort after she and Bob were empty nesters. Most recently, they brought home Seamus, a pure white Goldendoodle, who provided them with amusement and love.
In honor of Rosalie's memory, the family requests that donations be made to the Kris Hughes/Angelo Smith Memorial Scholarship in her honor.
