William Henry Cookus Jr.

26 mars 19438 novembre 2020

William (Bill) Henry Cookus, Jr., 77 of Martinsburg, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his family on November 8, 2020. Born on March 26, 1943 in Berkeley County, he was the son of the late William Henry Cookus and Lorene Viola (Crabbe) Cookus. Bill adored his wife, Deborah, of almost fifty years. They fell in love as teenagers. Bill was the love of her life! They were devoted to one another. Bill was a simple man who found his main joy in his family. He was happiest when his children and grandchildren were visiting. Bill had a big, sensitive heart and willingly helped all. He was skilled in woodworking, plumbing, and electrical work. His sense of humor made everyone laugh. After you met him once, you never forgot him. He proudly wore his “Here’s Handsome” hat that his grandson, Coleman, gave to him. His collection of “Here’s Handsome” items grew over the years and included a license plate and various jackets. These items sparked many conversations and laughs as he pointed them out to people, often strangers, or were just noticed by others. Bill was an active member of Westview Baptist Church where he attended for over twenty years. He was also a past member of Martinsburg Baptist Temple. The year 2020 has been a challenging year for all but it was especially difficult for Bill because he lost his dearest friend, Jim Richard. They were coffee buddies for years and were always there for each other. Bill is survived by his wife, Deborah (Coleman) Cookus; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew W. and Susan Cookus; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Matthew Nutter; three grandchildren: Alexis and Bryce Cookus and Coleman Nutter; one sister, Betty Snyder; two sister-in-laws: Nancy Cookus and Cynthia Pickren; and brother-in-law, Donald Pickren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Paul W. Cookus, Gary W. Cookus, and Douglas R. Cookus; and sister, Dawn (Cookus) Mose. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Martinsburg Rescue Mission because Bill cared deeply about the work that occurred there. Friends and family will be received on Thursday November 12, 2020 from 5:30pm until the time of the Memorial Service at 7pm at Westview Baptist Church, 301 S. Louisiana Ave. Martinsburg, WV 25401
