Growing up between foster homes, Mike accompanied his friend George Feighner home one night for dinner, and was immediately taken in by the family as one of their own until he graduated Rainier Beach High School. Mike and George were life-long friends, raising their young families together through holidays and special events and carrying on their friendship at the Long Acres horse racing track and poker nights that continued into their 70s.
Mike had a passion for dogs, cars, horse racing, sports, poker, and all things summer. A creature of habit, Mike began every morning with a black coffee, an Everett Herald and a cigarette. He owned the long-time Marysville car lot, Chevyland Auto Sales and raced cars at the Evergreen Speedway in Monroe in the 1970s and 1980s. When he wasn’t racing or selling them, Mike and his first wife Linda enjoyed packing up the family car for weekend road trips to destinations like Eugene, Wenatchee, and Sun Lakes. Later in life, Mike was never without his Kelly Blue Book and his cell phone, as he and his second wife, Gail Cross-Cummins, sold cars wholesale and enjoyed weekend trips to Reno.
Mike was dubbed a “miracle” patient in 2005 after the Everett Herald ran a front-page story chronicling Mike’s unlikely survival of a cardiac arrest in a Safeway parking lot when two off-duty Cascade Valley Hospital nurses happened to noticed him slumped over in his car and performed life-saving CPR. This was preceded by open heart surgeries in the 1980s and 1990s, but each time, Mike bounced back.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Cross-Cummins; daughters Linda (Pat; deceased) Ellingson; Debbie (Bob) Schurman; Lori (Byron) Scheller; grandchildren Robbie, Shaun, Stephanie, Brandon, Katrisha (Tyson), and Kevin; step-daughters Laurie Westlund; Kristie Westlund; and step-granddaughter Allie.
Funeral arrangements will be held at noon, September 11th, at Marysville Cemetery, followed by a Celebration of Life at his home, 130 117th St NE, Marysville, WA
