Sandra D. Pollitte Columbia Moss, 75 an art teacher and resident of old Washington, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012 at Meadowview Regional Medical Center after a short illness. Sandra was born in Harlan, KY on July 12, 1936, the daughter and only child of the late James J. and Jennie Jo Hughes Pollitte. She was the granddaughter of the late Edd D. and Mabel Anno Pollitte of Mason County, and late Ben and Gladys Rodman Hughes, of Franklin County. Sandra was proud of her family heritage, which reached back to Kentucky’s earliest settlers through several branches. She was an eighth-generation Mason Countian. Mrs. Moss graduated from Henry Clay High School and attended University of Kentucky. She was an art teacher at St. Patrick’s School. For many years she worked as a draftsman for local civil engineering firms. She also did independent art work, including pen-and-ink drawings of many of local schools, and local designs and logos, including that used by the City of Maysville. In 2011, she was presented an Outstanding Community Service Award to the City of Maysville by the Rotary Club of Maysville. Sandra often described herself as “a draftsman, not an artist,” but she had a gift for seeing and appreciating art in the natural and material world and a talent for helping a generation of students develop their own artistic gifts. She was a member of the Church of the Nativity and taught Sunday School for over 30 years and a former member of its vestry. Survivors include her husband of 21 years, James C. Moss; a son, James (Melissa) Columbia of Mason County, three daughters, Dana Latham (Billy Cropper) of May’s Lick, Cathy (Chris) Spencer of Frankfort, and Laura Reed (Rob Knox) of Maysville, a step-son, Michael (Christine) Moss, of Janesville, Wisconsin, and grandchildren, Christopher Gallagher, Isaac Reed, Jennie Spencer, Morgan Reed, Kyle Moss and Emily Moss and her first husband Robert (Elnora) Columbia. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law Randy Reed. Services for Sandra Columbia Moss will be conducted at 11 a.m. Fri, May 4 at the Church of the Nativity in Maysville with Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Olivet Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are Ben Hughes, Rodman Hughes, Ronnie Anderson, Jr., Ty Newdigate, Corey Newdigate, Craig Chamberlain, and Michael Moss. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. at the Knox and Brothers Funeral Home on Thur, May 3 and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to St. Agnes’ House, 635 Maxwelton Court, Lexington, KY 40508.
