Our loving and devoted mother, grandmother and aunt, Doris Gwendolyn Williamson, 91, went home peacefully to be with her Lord on September 18, 2015 in Atlanta, Ga. Doris was born June 1, 1924 to William and Edna Mathis in Detroit, one of nine children and the last living sibling. She attended Detroit Public Schools, graduating from Northern High School in 1942. On January 5, 1941, Doris accepted Jesus Christ at Chene and Jay Church of God. Doris and Willie Williamson were married September 3, 1945, and were blessed with four children: Willie Albert Jr, Ronald, Derrick and Cheryl. While Willie Sr. was at Howard University Medical School, Doris was a civil servant at the Pentagon, receiving an innovation award. When Bill graduated in 1954, they returned to Michigan. Doris was nurtured into a Godly life by her mother Edna and her grandmother, Lillie (BigMama). Her older sister, Mildred, and brother, William Jr., were her constant companions. Her brother Lowell, loved her dearly, spoiling her and naming his daughter 'Little' Doris. Doris in turn, lovingly spoiled her 'baby' brother, Donald. The sisters were known in the city for their "Mathis" beauty and charm. Doris loved sharing her gifts with many, writing hundreds of poems and creating many works of art and mentoring young artists many in her home studio. Along with her sisters, Doris was a devoted reader. She was also an avid golfer, getting the elusive 'hole in one' early on. She was an original member of the Detroit lady's golf club -the "Par Girls." Doris earned her Bachelor and Master's Degrees at Wayne State University and became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, along with her sister, Gladys and their godmother, Arnette Burwell. Doris also worked extensively with Dr. Charles H Wright and the original African American Museum in Detroit, until moving to Arizona in 1980. Doris remained in Arizona for thirty years as a devoted member of Shiloh Christian Center, pastored by nephew, Dr. Joseph (Carolyn) Tumpkin, and was an Elementary Art teacher at SC School for over twenty years. Lovingly called "Aunt Doris", she had a heart for prayer, sharing in nursing homes, and going to Home Fellowship Group led by Gil and Larcenia White. She loved Jesus more than life, praying and making Him known to her family and friends was her lifelong mission. Doris travelled the world both for leisure and taking God's love to faraway Africa. She loved visiting museums, antique stores, shopping, and photography. She loved visiting and spending time with her all of her family. Her beautiful smile, laughter and joyful presence will be greatly missed. She is now experiencing great joy, peace and love with Jesus, family and friends in heaven. She leaves a legacy of love through her children Willie, Ronald, Derrick and Cheryl, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family, friends and brothers and sisters in Christ.
