

Mr. George L. Wilson, age 97, of Locust Grove, went home to be with the Lord on January 25, 2026. He was born in Spalding County, Georgia, on January 19, 1929, to Thomas D. Wilson, Sr. and Nancy Irene Stanton Wilson.
Mr. Wilson graduated high school in Griffin, Georgia, and went on to study agriculture at the University of Georgia, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree in 1950. Throughout his life, Mr. Wilson worked for Otis Elevator installing elevators. He also sold insurance for Georgia Farm Bureau, and he ultimately retired (twice) from the University of Georgia’s Agricultural Experiment Station in Griffin, Georgia.
In addition to these careers, Mr. Wilson owned and operated a full-time farm in Locust Grove. Farming was his passion and being outside riding his tractor and feeding cattle were among his favorite activities. He continued to enjoy both until shortly before his death at age 97.
Mr. Wilson loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a lifelong Georgia Bulldogs fan, and he looked forward to Saturday afternoons in the fall when he could cheer on the Dawgs.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his brothers, Roy T. Lloyd, Jr., William Parker Wilson, Sr., Thomas D. Wilson, Jr., and Frank S. Wilson, Sr.; his wife, Joanne Buntyn Wilson; his son, Jeffrey Snelling; his former spouse, Nancy Birdsong Wilson; and three nieces, Susan Anne Wilson, Judy Wilson Dixon, and Lori Wilson Drake.
He is survived by his children: Steve Wilson; Dan Wilson (Kathy); Betty Ochs (Howard); Ann Bass (James); Cathy Snelling; and Shannon Shrewsbury (Rick). He is also survived by seventeen grandchildren: Lisa Wilson Hodges, Eric Wilson, Shea Wilson Mica (Chris), Kathryn Wilson Carpenter (Keith), Frances Wilson Dobbs (Jake), James Wilson (Katie), Thomas Wilson (Kim), Miles Ochs, Danielle Ochs, Abby Ochs, Jacob Bass, Clay Bass, Chasity Snelling (Lisa), Chase Snelling (Kate), Matt Ballard, Chris Ballard, and Brandon Shrewsbury (Amanda); and twenty-one great-grandchildren: Ethan Trawick, Harper Hodges, Ava Hodges, Zach Payton, Britton Mica, Joey Carpenter, Bailey Hames, Braxton Carpenter, Savannah Sikes, Evone Dobbs, Coty Dobbs, Charlotte Wilson, Sarah Kathryn Wilson, Eli Wilson, Nathan Wilson, Andrew Wilson, Braelynn Black, Charlie Snelling, Joanna Ballard, William Ballard, and Alder Shrewsbury.
Mr. Wilson is also survived by his sister-in-law, Georgia Wilson Jones, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted for George L. Wilson at Locust Grove United Methodist Church, 211 Peeksville Road, Locust Grove, where he was a lifelong member. The family will receive visitors at the church at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 31st. A celebration of Mr. Wilson’s life will follow at 12:00 p.m., with the Rev. Gil McGinnis officiating. A graveside service will follow at Locust Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Wilson’s name to the Locust Grove United Methodist Church Youth.
