It is the hope of every man that they may look back on their life finding an overwhelming sense of peace and accomplishment. Not only did Joe Sheets live fearlessly and without regrets, but he also walked boldly toward a divine destination. Strength and unmatched resilience characterized his everyday life, but a tender heart and compassionate ear set him apart. A true servant to his family, friends, employees, and community. May we all be willing to live a life worthy of the Heavenly greeting- “well done my good and faithful servant.”
Joe Allen Sheets was born on April 6th, 1946, in West Jefferson, North Carolina to Lester and Flossie. One of five, his childhood spent in the mountains was treasured memories. After moving to Atlanta, it took only one look at Rosa Marie and his heart was no longer his own. Joe and Rosa started Sheets Construction Company from inside their home which they continued to operate in Locust Grove for 55 years. From working on the 5-mile bridge in Key West to the Atlanta Airport, they watched their dreams blossom while considering every person who walked thru their doors family. As business partners they became the most successful highway sign contractor in Georgia by sheer grit and God’s favor.
Whether Joe was working on the side of the road or drinking a can of sprite at home watching a western, his sense of humor and larger than life personality filled the air. Passion was evident in all aspects of his life. An avid outdoorsman, some of his best times were fishing and hunting. In his later years, drag racing became his latest endeavor. Skilled in mechanics, he refused to sit still. You may associate him with the lottery tickets purchased from the local gas station, the winnings from his late nights at the blackjack table on their annual anniversary trip to Las Vegas, cans of sprite littering his vehicle, or even the faint scent of cigarette smoke leaking from his smile, but it is the Godly integrity and boundless love that he leaves as a legacy.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Rosa Marie Sheets, and sister Betty Dixon. He was a proud father to Diane, and husband Jamie as well as Kenny and his wife Angela. Papaw to Danielle, and her husband Jeff, Andrew along with his wife Leigh and daughter Brynleigh, and Nathan. Visitation is scheduled for January 30,2022 at 2pm in Bethany Baptist Church in McDonough, Georgia. Funeral proceedings will follow at 3pm. You may send flowers or a donation to the Bethany Baptist Church Building Fund.
