Mary Carter Gorham, 78, of McDonough went home to be with her the Lord on Sunday, November 3, 2019. She was born in Atlanta, GA, to the late Virgil Leon Carter and Edith Kelley Carter, on November 7, 1940. Mary attended Murphy High School in Atlanta. She was an active member of Kirkwood United Methodist Church, Columbia Drive United Methodist Church where she served as organist and choir director for over 20 years, and McDonough First United Methodist Church where she served as part time organist and pianist, led Women’s Bible Study for over 20 years, and key leader of the Christmas Pageant and Live Nativity, Flower Ministry, along with so many other ministry efforts. Mary was also involved in the community where she delivered Meals on Wheels. Although reluctant at first, she immediately fell in love with camping and travelling, something she did with her husband and children for over 40 years.
She enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, working in the yard, and spending time with her family. Mary never met a stranger; she was loved by everyone she met, treasured because of her contagious smile, her infectious laugh, heartfelt hugs, devotion to her family and friends, and most importantly to her God.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Jimmie Gorham, Sr; her four children, Terri (Mike) O’Quinn of McDonough; Jim (Maria) Gorham of Oregon; David (Cheryl) Gorham of San Antonio, TX; and Joy (Jim) Vogel of Dublin, OH; her 11 grandchildren, Jessica (Mark) Ashby of Spartanburg, SC; Andy (Kayla) O’Quinn of Acworth, GA; Jimmy Vogel, Christopher (Kelly) Vogel, Matthew Vogel, Joshua Vogel, and Allie Vogel, all of Dublin, OH; Lindsay Gorham of Orlando, FL; Dylan and Blake Gorham of Oregon; Brian Gorham, of Georgia; three great grandchildren, Carson Ashby, Cooper Ashby, and Presley Ashby, all of Spartanburg, SC; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her two brothers, Leon and J.L. Carter, and her sister, Anne Whitehead. The family will receive friends at Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough, GA, on Wednesday, Nov 6, 2019, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held in the sanctuary of McDonough First United Methodist Church on Thursday, Nov 7, 2019, at 11:00 am with Pastor Carol Cook and the Rev. Dr. Dana Everhart officiating. Entombment at East Lawn Memorial Park will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in memory of Mary Gorham to McDonough First United Methodist Church, 151 Macon St, McDonough, GA, 30253.
