

Maxine Bowman Doche, known to her family as "Mackie", passed away on February 17, 2025, in Jonesboro, Georgia, at the age of 82. Born on September 24, 1942, in Atlanta, Georgia, she lived a life filled with dedication to her family, community, and passions.
Maxine had a strong work ethic and spent 15 years serving as an employee for the state of Georgia. She also contributed to the education system as a Clayton County Public Schools employee for several years. Her career reflected her commitment to public service and her desire to make a difference in the lives of those around her.
Beyond her professional life, Maxine was an active and vibrant member of various social organizations. She was a proud member of the Forest Park Senior Center and participated in The Red Hat Society (Purple Passion Ladies Branch), where she was affectionately known as "Country Pumpkin." She also dedicated time to The Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. (Post 6330), The American Legion Auxiliary (Post 258), The South Metro Independent Laughter Engineers (S.M.I.L.E.), where she was known as "Skeeter," and The Women of the Moose (Henry County Chapter #1115). Through these groups, she built lasting friendships and brought joy to many.
Maxine had a deep love for music and movement—she found great happiness in dancing and singing. She also enjoyed sewing, creating beautiful pieces that reflected her creativity and skill. Above all else, she cherished her family. She adored her great-grandson Oliver Layne Gunn and took immense pride in all of her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter Ginger Johnson (Charlie) of Jonesboro, Georgia; grandchildren Tim Vasser of Jonesboro, Georgia; Amber Gunn (Zach) of Decatur, Alabama; Zachary Johnson of Jonesboro, Georgia; CJ Johnson of Jonesboro, Georgia; and great-grandson Oliver Layne Gunn of Decatur, Alabama. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Maxine was preceded in death by her mother Josephine Keel Dumas; father George Washington Bowman; siblings Barbara Jo Andenes, John William Dumas, Darien Robert Dumas, Ruby Mae Stegeman, and Sharon Kay Shiver; grandmother Mattie Bell Keel; as well as several beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to honor Maxine's life during visitations at Friendship Baptist Church (687 Gaskill St. S.E., Atlanta, GA 30316) on March 7, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM and on March 8, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. A memorial service will follow at the same location on March 8 at 2:00 PM.
