

A.E. “Coach” Drew left this world to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 4, 2013. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday, December 6, 2013, at Cole Funeral Home, 1113 West Fifth Street, McGregor. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, December 8, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Woodway with Rev. Terry Johnston officiating. Interment will follow in McGregor Cemetery.
Coach Drew was born September 11, 1930, in Houston, Texas, the son of the late Acy Edward and Thelma Dee (McClendon) Drew of Baytown, Texas. In 1948 he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and received honors of Mr. Robert E. Lee and First Team All-State as a quarterback. He played football for Baylor University and later played professional baseball. He earned a Masters Degree with top honors from Sam Houston University, receiving a scholarship offers for PhD studies.
Coach A.E. Drew had a legendary coaching career at both Valley Mills and McGregor High School. He was also an educator, teaching chemistry and biology and a highly regarded principal. Coach Drew was an advocate for all students and players during a tumultuous time in our nation. His greatest passion was his family. Coach Drew’s greatest joy in life was his wife and three daughters. Each member of his family knew he would be there to support, love and protect them. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye. He was their greatest supporter in whatever they chose to do. His greatest love was for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Also preceding him in death was a granddaughter, Sarah Hering.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-years, Dorothy Hyles Drew; three daughters, Debbie Hering and husband Boyd, Connie Smith and husband Bill, Tina Simpson; six grandchildren, Zeb Hering and wife Jenny, Drew McNeil and wife Joy, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Will Smith, Callie Smith El-Halabi and husband Khalil and five great grandchildren.
