

Cliff “Zip” Bartels of McGregor died Thursday night October 17, 2013, at the age of 74. Viewing will commence at 9 A.M. Monday with a formal visitation from 6 to 8 P.M. at Cole Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday at Cole Funeral Home Chapel, 1113 West Fifth Street, McGregor with Pastor A.C. Painter officiating. Interment will follow in McGregor Cemetery.
Mr. Bartels was born August 21, 1939, in McGregor, Texas, the son of the late Hardy and Olga (Wiedemann) Bartels. In 1958, he graduated from McGregor High School. On June 30, 1961, he married Judy Darlene Moody in McGregor. After thirty-seven years of marriage, she preceded him in death December 6, 1998.
For fifty years, he was employed by Central Freight Lines in Waco as a truck driver and instructor until his April 2011 retirement.
Zip as he was affectionally called, was a life long McGregor resident who will be remembered for his delicious peanut brittle. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Gatesville.
Also preceding him in death was a brother, Clarence “Red” Bartels; sisters Marie Bartels, Helen Davis, Ruby Birchum.
Survivors include a son Steven Bartels of Waco; a daughter Glenna Marr of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; two sisters, Clara Williams of Waco, Virgie January of Port Lavaca; five grandchildren, Stephanie Bartels, Samantha Bartels, Lenze Marr, Sydne Marr, Landon Marr; two great grandchildren Savien Gutierrez and Nicholas Trujillo; a special friend, Wanda Long of McGregor.
