
Edith Corbitt Ardell died Monday night, April 8, 2013, at the age of 96. Graveside services and interment will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Moody Cemetery with Dr. Tom Shelton officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at Cole Chapel, 304 Eighth Street, Moody.
Mrs. Ardell was born March 4, 1917, in Winnsboro, Texas, the daughter of the late Columbus Whitmar and Zula Lark (Warren) Corbitt and attended school in Oklahoma. After high school, she continued her education at a cosmetology school in Amarillo, Texas and a business school in Dalhart, Texas. On September 26, 1932, she married Clifton Elmo Mitchell in Hollis, Oklahoma. After forty-six years of marriage, he preceded her in death November 8, 1978. She was employed as a secretary to the assistant administrator at Flagstaff Community Hospital in Flagstaff, Arizona until her 1977 retirement. In 1979, she moved to Texas where she married Leland Ardell in 1979 who preceded her in death a few years later on November 19, 1983.
Edith was instrumental in forming local chapters of Beta Sigma Phi. She was a charter member of the Beta Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, having joined in 1962, in Camp Verde, Arizona. She was also a charter member of XI Alpha Alpha Chapter of Flagstaff, Arizona in 1971 then a charter member of XI Beta Phi Chapter in Kingman, Arizona in 1978. It brought her great pleasure to be a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi.
In 1982, she moved to Moody and became an active member of First Baptist Church where for several years was the Senior Adult Director. She enjoyed singing and was a member of the Tuesday Singers in Moody. Her concern for the citizens of Moody found her to be an active volunteer for the Meals on Wheels Program, was on the Board of Directors for the Housing Authority and was active in the Bible Study Group.
Also preceding her in death were brothers, James Arthur Corbitt, V.T. Corbitt, Bob Corbitt, Carmac Corbitt; a daughter, Merle Lou Whalen and two sisters, Ruby Sharp and Bonnie Lou Shamburger.
Survivors include a daughter, Treva Dorece Mc Dowell of Falmouth, VA; two brothers, Norman B. Corbitt and wife Orleen of Alabama, Ernest Corbitt of Moody; eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
For those desiring, the family has suggested the Moody EMS or Moody Volunteer Fire Department for memorial contributions.
