

James A. “Jim” Brookes of Moody died Monday afternoon, March 7, 2011, at the age of 82. Memorial services will be 10:00 Saturday, April 2, 2011, at First Baptist Church of Moody with Dr. Tom Shelton officiating. Inurnment will follow in Moody Cemetery under the direction of Cole Chapel, 304 Eighth Street, Moody.
Mr. Brookes was born April 3, 1928, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of the late Jack and Pearl (Tegge) Brookes where he graduated from high school. He continued his education at the University of Texas in Austin. On April 3, 1960, he married the former Dorothy Enloe Taylor in Temple, Texas. From 1962 until 1975, he was employed by American Desk in Temple where he was vice president of engineering and received a patent on a solid state switch. In 1980, they moved to Moody where he opened Brookes Television. He remained in business for eighteen years until his 1998 retirement.
Jim was actively in involved in the Moody Community. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School in the Men’s Department and founded the tape ministry. He was a member of Moody Masonic Lodge where he served as Worshipful Master and was a District Deputy. In his spare time, he could be found fishing, camping and bowling.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Brookes; a son David Taylor and wife Olivera Nesic-Taylor of Dickinson; a daughter Phyllis McElroy and husband Ronny of Lufkin; a sister Pearl Schulle of Houston; four grandchildren, Jane McVey and husband Shannon, Will Taylor and wife Lindsay, John McElory and wife Ashley, Lindsey McElory; a great grandson, Landon McElory; two nieces, Cindy Warner and husband Bill and Norma Vinson and husband Mack.
