

John “Johnny” Herrington of Moody died Thursday morning, March 17, 2011, at the age of 91. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, March 21, 2011, at Moody Church of Christ with David Echols and James Haney officiating. Interment will follow in Moody Cemetery under the direction of Cole Funeral Home, 1113 West Fifth Street, McGregor. Visitation will be 4 to 6 P.M. Sunday at Cole Funeral Home.
Mr. Herrington was born August 17, 1919, in Rogers, Texas the son of the late Joseph Clark and Pearl Jeanetta (Wood) Herrington. At an early age, he moved to Moody where he was a 1938 graduate of Moody High School. He continued his education at Baylor University in Waco. On May 21, 1939, he married Laverne Christine Payne in Eddy, Texas. After seventy years of marriage, she preceded him in death November 13, 2009. Much of his life was spent in the grocery business. He was employed by Kimball Wholesale Grocery in Fort Worth and later owned Herrington Grocery in Moody prior to his 1976 retirement. After his retirement, he worked part-time for Wittes Food Store in McGregor and Hoffman Banana Company in Waco. From February 19, 1944 until his honorable discharge as a Pfc. on October 31, 1945, he served in the United States Army. He served in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart.
As long as his health permitted, he was a longtime devoted member of the Moody Church of Christ where he served as an Elder, Song Leader, Sunday School Teacher and bookkeeper. He was also a member of the Moody Lion’s Club, Moody Chamber of Commerce and served one year on the Moody City Council. It has been said the he enjoyed working and looking after his friends.
Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Owen Bledsoe and Marion Herrington.
Survivors include two sons, Howard Herrington and wife Phyllis of Waco, Larry Herrington and wife Jerree of Stephenville; a daughter Jeanette Swearingin and husband Mike of Moody; eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
Casketbearers will be his grandsons.
