How do you encompass 86 years of a wonderful, loved-filled life in a few paragraphs? He touched the lives of so many people with his kindness and humor. He was a wonderful son, husband, father, Ginka, friend, and neighbor, but that doesn’t fully explain the impact that Dave had on those around him.
Dave was born on February 1, 1940 to Gerald DeLancy and Mary Ann (Beatty) Young in Salamanca, NY. He was the fifth of ten children. His father Gerald passed away when he was 7 years old, and he often said how brave his mother was for raising ten children by herself. He was so proud of his family’s resilience.
After his graduation from Salamanca High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was on active duty from 1958-1962, and was primarily stationed in Camp Lejeune. It was during this time that he met his wife, Florence Carrie (Brennan) Young, and he knew she was the one from their first meeting.
Dave and Flo were married on August 31st, 1963. She was his greatest love and truest friend. They had two children, Thomas Andrew and Susan Marie, and raised their family on 84 East Street in Salamanca, just streets over from his mother and siblings. Dave began a career with UPS as a Delivery Driver, and often mentioned the difficulty of driving the large delivery truck in Western NY snow. He spent 30 years with UPS and retired in 1992.
Dave was an avid golfer in his adult life, being an active member at Elkdale Country Club and Henderson Country Club, after his move to North Carolina to be closer to grandkids. He loved sharing stories from the course and the clubhouse, and spent lots of time on the course to hone his craft. After moving to North Carolina, he became an avid fan of Duke Basketball, making several visits to Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Dave and Flo loved their grandkids and never missed an opportunity to spend time with them. They never missed one of Taylor’s dance recitals, Connor’s football games, or trips to visit Colby in Ontario.
He spent his final years at Verena at the Glen in Glen Allen, VA. He made many wonderful friends and enjoyed libations at Wine Down Wednesday and Friday Cheers. His favorite times were his weekly visits with his daughter Susan and weekly dinners with his granddaughter Taylor, where he never missed an opportunity to make the server roll their eyes from a questionable joke.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Flo Young, grandson Colby Pitt, siblings Juanita, Barbara, Jo Ann, Judy, and Dennis, and his parents, Gerald and Mary Young. He is survived by his son Thomas Young, daughter Susan Pitt, daughter-in-love Sandy Young (Robert), grandchildren Taylor (Daniel) Young and Connor (Madison) Young, and his siblings Don, Diane, Patti, and Jerry.
Services will be held at a later date in Salamanca, NY.
