

Ernest Carter Stanley, 94, claimed the promise of the resurrection on Monday, August 1, 2016, while surrounded by his family. Ernest answered his country’s “call” and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1941-1946. He was a member of the Enon United Methodist Church for almost 70 years.
Ernest is preceded in death by his five brothers, two sisters, son Bruce Carter Stanley, and great-grandchildren Colton and Caroline Wood. He leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Gladys, his daughters Marilyn Gooch and her husband Ronnie, Phyllis Morris and her husband Pete, daughter-in-law, Debbie Stanley. Ernest was a faithful man who loved his family and served his neighbors as family. He loved dearly his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Angie and Tommy Atkinson, Tommy Jr. and Taylor; Rondal and Hollie Gooch; Jason Stanley and Megan Saucier, Jayne Carter; Cameron and Suzanne Wood, Carter; Michael and Faith Stanley; Jennifer and Jeremy Carignan, Brooklyn and Joseph; Laurie and Michael Latham, Tyler and Ashley; and Daniel Stanley and his girlfriend Kate. He is also survived by a brother, James Stanley and his wife Mary Edna of Norfolk and a sister, Jeannette McCoy and her husband Chuck of Richmond.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 4 from 6-8 pm at Woody Funeral Home – Atlee Chapel, 9271 Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116. A service of death and resurrection will be held Friday, August 5 at 11:00 am at Enon United Methodist Church, 6156 Studley Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to the Enon United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Studley, VA 23162.
