

King, Irving Ray peacefully concluded his 91 year life journey surrounded by his loving family on September 20, 2013. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 59 years, Annie Louise Glasco King; two daughters, Patrice King Pillow (Alan), Sharon King Kelly (Bill); and his beloved grandson, Calan Pillow.
He was born on June 19, 1922 to Lilly and M.B. King. He graduated from John Marshall High School, then the University of Richmond. He joined the American Field Service where he drove an ambulance throughout Europe during WW II. He was a research physicist at Experiment Inc. / Texaco Research Lab. He also taught physics at VCU and the University of Richmond. In 1964 he was elected chairman of a Physics Symposium at Cambridge University, England. He was a former member of Highland Park United Methodist Church and then a member of Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church. "Irv" was loved by everyone he came in contact with, and had a special bond with animals. He took great pleasure in spending time with his grandson, visiting with others in nursing homes, and talking physics with his family at the dinner table. He will be remembered for his generosity, patience, and easy going nature.
The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 9271 Shady Grove Rd. in Mechanicsville. A celebration of Irving's life will be held on Tuesday, September 24th, at 11 a.m. at Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church, 6100 Chamberlayne Rd. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. There will be a reception at Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church after the burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond SPCA.
