Linda Arnold Shermer of Mechanicsville lost her year long battle with cancer on December 24th, 2013 and left us to be with the Lord. Linda was born on September 9th, 1941 in Richmond. She was predeceased by her parents Thomas Chester Arnold and Phyllis Traylor Smith. She is survived by her loving husband of over 53 years, Caton A. (Captain Fuzzzo) Shermer, sons Samuel (Rebecca) and Thomas (Dorothy) Shermer, grandchildren Sydney and Chloe Shermer, sister Debra (Allan) Mitchell, sister in law Mary (Bill) Lipscomb and numerous cousins and other relations in the area.
Linda was the manager and co-owner of the Hanover Aviation Co., a military spouse and in earlier days worked for Anderson and Strudwick and the Federal Reserve. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, painter, gardener, cat lover, confidant, advisor, cook, and a character, and she wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty. Many still remember her pink 1956 Cadillac and her custom trucks. She was a fixture in the Hanover Air Park and in nearby restaurants. Linda was a long time member of Cool Springs Baptist Church and a member of the last graduating class of Washington and Henry High School in Hanover. Even after long absences she remained best of friends with many of those she met there.
The spade, the hoe, the garden shears
now molder by the door.
The loving hands that held them
will not hold them any more.
'Tho it sounds strange 'twas prearranged
for her to plant a row
of Hanover tomatoes
on Heaven's southern shore.
So on the day we meet again
a picnic will ensue,
and we'll relive the happy life
with kin and friends we knew.
The family will hold visitations at the Atlee Chapel of the Woody Funeral Home at 9271 Shady Grove Road (the corner of Chamberlayne Road [Rte 301] and Shady Grove Road) on Sunday December 29th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A funeral service with reception to follow will be held at the Cool Spring Baptist Church, 9283 Atlee Station Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. at 11:00 AM on Monday December 30th. Burial with no accompanying ceremonies other than prayer will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 3:00 PM Monday December 30th, all are welcome to attend.
The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses that helped with her care over the last year. We would particularly like to thank her friends, family and neighbors that kept her and our spirits up during those trying times. Also we are thankful for the people at the Hospice of Virginia at Retreat hospital who took care of her and us over the last days. She will be sorely missed here on earth, but we commit her to the Lord for his care in the certainty that we will see her again one day in His domain.
