Maxine Tatum Cline

Graduated from Andrew Lewis HS in 1946 in Roanoke, VA and Marion Junior College in Roanoke, VA (1946-1948). Grace Hospital Nursing School (1948-1951) and then to Richmond Professional Institute (now VCU until 1953) in Richmond graduating with a Batchelor of Science degree. She taught one class of student nurses from 1952-1955 at Grace Hospital and worked as a hospital nurse from 1955-1964. From 1964-1983, she worked as a pre-school teacher, nurse and the last two years was director at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church daycare. In 1984, she returned to nursing until retiring in January, 2005.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Charles H. Cline from Urbanna, VA. Her parents, Tobe Tatum and Blanche Tatum, sister, Nelda Tatum and her daughter, Ellen R C Lampkin.

She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Gontkovic (Charles Gontkovic), son-in-law Milton Lampkin (Frankie). Grandchildren, Erin R L Engel (Jason), Sarah Lampkin, C. Matthew Gontkovic and Caron G. Smith (Adam) and granddaughter, Amanda McCauley (John) daughters, Lyndsey McCauley and Shelby McCauley and Maxine’s great grandchildren, Addison Smith, Colton Smith and Maddox Engel. Also included numerous cousins and friends.

I would like to thank Nelly Cunningham and Janet Sheets, aids that worked with mom tending to her comfort . Also, all the staff at Hanover Manor/Alpha House in Ashland and the hospice group ASCEND for helping with Mom’s medical needs.

There will be a visitation 10am and memorial service at 11am on 2/7/2026 at Woody Funeral Home - Atlee in Mechanicsville, VA. The burial will be a private ceremony in Topping, VA at Harmony Grove Baptist Church, where she will be buried next to her husband.
