Betty Vermell Burt, lovingly known as “Bobbie” to her family and friends, was born Betty Vermell Hatfield in Empire, California. For reasons unknown, she was called “Bobbie” from a very young age—a name that stayed with her throughout her life.
According to her cousin, when they were growing up, Bobbie was known as “the smartest one,” a reflection of her lifelong love of reading. After graduating from high school, she attended Samual Merritt School of Nursing College in Oakland, California, where she earned her nursing degree. During her time as a nurse, she often spoke about how much she loved caring for newborns in the maternity ward.
In 1959 she married her husband, Warren Taylor Burt, known as Jack. Together they raised four children and built a full and busy life in California. After the birth of her first child, Bobbie devoted herself to being a mother and managing their home. She guided her children through countless activities, from martial arts and dance to scouting, music, and swimming.
Bobbie and Jack shared a love to be admired, celebrating 54 years of marriage, with their devotion to one another beautifully reflected in their family. Her children each carry special memories of her. Her son Kenny credits her steady presence and consistency for shaping his life and helping him become the man he is today. Her daughter Tammy fondly remembers her mother’s playful silly side, including one Christmas in the desert when she tried to make snowmen out of tumbleweeds. Suzi, the youngest, recalls the many hours her mom spent supporting her swimming career, always her greatest cheerleader. Danny remembers that although she insisted she was not a “pet person,” she was the one who once brought home a tiny puppy.
Bobbie had a special love for babies, which she carried into her role as a grandmother. She lovingly cared for all six of her grandchildren, each of whom remembers her with deep affection.
She was an avid follower of the news and politics and enjoyed many spirited discussions about the issues of the day. In quieter moments, Bobbie found joy in quilting and sewing. Her family treasures the quilts she made, each one a lasting symbol of her care and creativity. Ever a learner, as an adult, Bobbie took up the piano and spent many happy hours playing.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Warren Taylor Burt; her parents, Velma and William Hatfield; and her siblings, James Hatfield, William Hatfield Jr., and Mary Jane Mitchell.
She is survived by her children: Tamara Farris, Daniel Burt, Kenneth Burt, and Susan Fitzpatrick; her six grandchildren: Taylor Farris, Jakob Farris, Kenneth Burt Jr., Richard Burt, Katie Fitzpatrick, and Sarah O’Donnell; and her new great-grandbabies, Cassie O’Donnell and Colton Burt, with another, Wylder Farris, on the way.
Though she could not meet her great-grandchildren in person, she cherished their photos and video calls and adored them deeply.
She leaves behind a family who will forever hold her in their hearts.
Rest in peace, Mom.
