Helmut Fuchs of Central Point, Oregon, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at the age of 88. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Born in Vienna, Austria, to Hans Ernst Israel Fuchs and Margarete Marianne Karoline Lalak, Helmut came with his younger sister Eva to the United States in 1949. He served as an airman first class and an instructor in the U.S. Air Force after becoming a U.S. citizen in 1957. He and his future wife, Dorothy Lee Ash, were pen pals who first met in person in January 1958, fell in love, and were married on August 15, 1959.
A committed follower of Jesus Christ and a science whiz, Helmut attended Concordia Seminary in the 1950s and returned to school to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1973 from Purdue University. He was fascinated with computers, mechanics, numbers, and nature. In his later years, Helmut enjoyed gardening, always giving fresh berries, cherries, grapes, and other produce to friends and neighbors.
Helmut is survived and dearly remembered by his children Sara (George Crowder) of Murrieta, Calif., Rebecca (Michael Easter) of Wessington Springs, S.D., Christopher (Aida) of Roseville, Calif., and Daniel (Angeline) of Galt, Calif., as well as 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. His wife, parents, and sister preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at Central Point Seventh Day Adventist Church, 625 N. 10th Street in Central Point on Thursday, February 16, at 2 p.m. Military honors at Eagle Point National Cemetery will be Friday, February 17, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Central Point Adventist Church.
