

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 61 years George Nelson Vandeventer, Sr.
Granny as she was lovingly known is survived by her children Ann Louise Ince (Paul), Raymond Nelson Vandeventer, Virginia Lyle Maier and will be remembered by her grandchildren Paul Richard Ince, Jr., Richard Lyle McCullar, Molly Lyle Ince, Adam Nelson Vandeventer, Alicia Vandeventer Royal, and Andrew Nelson Vandeventer along with four great-grandchildren Hunter, Chandler, Tanner, and Devon.
Dorothy was born in Clarksville, Tennessee and moved to Memphis with her parents when she was twelve. Graduating from South Side High School, she went on to earn a degree from Draughns Business College. She worked for many years as Raymond Firestone’s personal secretary and later worked for the John Gerber Co. and M.M. Cohn - two local department stores. In 1971, Dorothy as leader of Girl Scout Troop 592 took the girls to seven countries in twenty-one days on proceeds earned from publication of the cookbook “Scouts in the Kitchen” - a book compiling favorite recipes of members and friends. Shortly after her arrival in Memphis, she was invited to attend Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and started teaching Sunday school at the age of fifteen. For 65 plus years, she taught both childen and adult confirmation classes; was editor of the “Tract” the church newsletter for thirty-three years; and also edited and published the “Parson’s Bearer, Lay-reader and terms served on the Vestry. In 2001 while Holy Trinity was preparing to celebrate its 100th Anniversary and she was preparing to celebrate her 78th birthday, Dorothy taught herself to use a computer; and then wrote, edited and published “2001 a Faith Odyssey” a book chronicling the history of her parish.
Dorothy also enjoyed beading as she developed and produced a unique set of Episcopal Prayer Beads which have been marketed locally and at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
Visitation will be held at the Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue on Monday, July 14, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 3749 Kimball Avenue, Memphis, Tuesday, July 15 at 10 a.m. Dorothy’s wishes were that in lieu of flowers any memorials be made to her beloved Holy Trinity.
