Rev. George King Comes, Jr.

Rev. George King Comes, Jr. was born June 11, 1926 to parents George King Comes, Sr. and Lorena Dacus Comes. He died on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Methodist Hospital in Germantown, Tennessee. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 28 from 5:00p.m – 7:00p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens on Poplar Avenue. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, September 29 beginning at 2:00p.m, with visitation an hour prior, at Trinity U.M.C., 1738 Galloway Avenue. George was a graduate of Central High School class of 1944, Southwestern College and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. He served in the U.S. Navy in Guam during WWII. In Union Avenue U.M.C., his boyhood church, he married Laura Charlotte Ingram of Memphis on June 19, 1951. They celebrated their 59th year of marriage this past June. Rev. Comes served as associate minister of Trinity U.M.C. and was the founding pastor of Underwood U.M.C. and served as senior minister there through 1962. Rev. Comes was also the senior pastor of the following United Methodist Churches: Everett Memorial, Millington 1st, Fulton 1st, Trinity, Colonial Park, St. Stephen’s, Wesleyan Hills, and Munford 1st. He retired from the ministry in 1991 but remained active in the Memphis Conference of the United Methodist Church through 2007. He continued to support the Conference faithfully with his prayers and donations. He officiated at the baptism and marriage of each of his children, the baptisms of each grandchild, and the confirmation of his two oldest grandchildren. Rev. Comes is survived by his wife Charlotte; four children all of Memphis, Charles King Comes, Laura Leigh Hartmann, Christopher Cullen (Maggi) Comes, and Mark Clinton (Meg) Comes; six grandchildren all of Memphis, Amanda and Matthew Hartmann, Sam, Tucker, Tyler and Julia Comes.
