

Graves Edwards Enck passed quietly from this earth on Thursday, June 2, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on December 27, 1938. Graves was the only child of Elmer and Nell Enck.
After graduating from Arlington Heights High School in Fort Worth, Texas, Graves began a path of life-long learning that he followed to the very end of his life. His academic achievements include: Bachelor of Arts, University of North Texas; Master of Divinity, Southwestern Seminary; Master of Arts, Texas Christian University; Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy, Yale University.
Graves began his teaching career in the Department of Sociology at Memphis State University in 1974 and completed his 48th year May 15, 2022. Graves had a special love for teaching and working with students. Those skills were made evident with his receiving numerous awards during his tenure: Distinguished Teaching Service Award (1980 and 1991), University College Advising Award (1985), W. Russell Smith Award for Teaching (1994), University College Distinguished Faculty Award (1996), University Distinguished Faculty Advising Award (2002), University College Advising Award (2003). His passion for learning and critical thinking touched the lives of thousands of students, many of whom remained in contact with him in subsequent years, much to his delight.
Graves was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice; two sons, Jim Enck of Memphis and Mike Enck (Robin) of Germantown; two granddaughters, Eva Enck and Iris Enck of London, England; two grandsons Will Enck and Walker Enck of Germantown.
His smile, sense of humor, friendship, caring and loving spirit will be missed by many family members and friends.
A reception celebrating the life of Graves will be held on Friday, June 24 at 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home - Poplar Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the Enck family has requested that friends and family consider contributions to the "The Graves Enck Scholarship in Sociology" named in honor of Dr. Graves Enck's 48 years of outstanding teaching and dedicated service in directing the Undergraduate Program in Sociology at the University of Memphis.
