Born on February 5, 1944, in Coldwater, Mississippi, Gwen was the daughter of the late Timothy Davis, Sr. and Ever Jean Davis. She accepted the gospel at an early age and was baptized at the Thyatira Church of Christ, beginning a lifelong walk of faith and service.
On February 19, 1968, Gwen was united in holy matrimony to the late Jim W. Bynum of Greenville, Mississippi. Together, they built a loving home and later settled in Memphis, Tennessee. Their union was blessed with two daughters, who were the joy of her life.
Gwen graduated from Tate County High School in 1962 and went on to earn a degree in Early Childhood Education from MI College in 1966. With a heart for nurturing young minds, she began a teaching career that spanned over 30 years. Her classroom was more than a place of learning; it was a space of encouragement, curiosity, and growth. Gwen was admired by colleagues and loved by generations of students for her innovative approach and unwavering dedication to education.
Her commitment to children extended far beyond the school walls. Gwen was a dedicated volunteer, giving her time and energy to numerous summer camps and youth programs. Her generosity, kindness, and uplifting spirit touched everyone she encountered.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim W. Bynum, and her brothers, Tommy Earl Davis and Jefferson Davis.
Gwen leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Gwennette McDowell of Memphis, TN, and Jennifer Smith (Glen) of Smyrna, TN; four grandchildren, Ethan McDowell, Katelyn Smith, Alex McDowell, and Kaycie Smith, who will carry forward her legacy with pride and purpose.
She is also survived by five sisters: Doris Smith, Alena Little, Jurley Watson, Sarah Towns (Curtis), and Teresa Hibbler; and four brothers: Timothy Davis Jr., Orlando Davis (Lucille), Keith Davis, and Carlton Davis (Teresa). Her memory will be lovingly carried on by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, former students, and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00a.m. on Saturday May 10, 2025 at Boulevard Church of Christ. Friends, family, and former students are invited to gather in celebration of Gwen’s remarkable life and lasting legacy.
