Gwendolyn Janette Mitchell was born November 8, 1953 to Morris Lawrence and Charlesetta Davis Lawrence in Wichita, Kansas. Better known as Gwen, she was the oldest and only daughter from their union. Gwen was later united in marriage to Steven A. Mitchell and to this union a daughter was born, Shayla Denaye’ Mitchell. Gwen eventually moved to Arkansas to start a career in grocery store management with Grocery Supply Company/Food Depot that lead her to Memphis, TN. She later went into convenience store management for years with Mapco Express and Exxon, with whom she retired. Gwen was preceded in death by her mother, Charlesetta Sweat of Wichita, KS; brothers, Kevin Lawrence of Wichita, KS and Richard Lawrence of Wichita, KS. Gwen is survived by her father, Morris Lawrence of Wichita, KS; brother, Everett Lawrence of Wichita, KS; and daughter, Shayla D. Mitchell of Memphis, TN. Gwen leaves to cherish a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, a niece, and a multitude of friends and extended family who will miss her dearly. Family will receive guests Tuesday, July 13, 2021 from 12-2pm with a memorial service to follow at 2pm at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Ave., Memphis, TN 38122.
