Herrold Edward Hanson was born September 2nd, 1935, to George Calvin Hanson, Jr. and Fannie Archer Hanson in Memphis Tennessee at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Jerome and his second wife of 42 years Lola Cummings Hanson. He died June 9th, 2023, at Quince Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was also preceded in death by his brother George Calvin (Buddy) Hanson, III, and is survived by his brother Charles Hanson. He is also survived by the last love of his life - his very good friend, companion, and caretaker Sandra Brawner of Memphis.
His children are Herrold (Hal) Hanson Jr. (Genice), Carol Friar (Michael), Danny Hanson, Perry Hanson (Nicki), David Hanson (Christina) and a stepdaughter Terry Nix. Grandchildren include Rachel Mistrille, Jennifer Hanson, Jamie King, Kris Moore, Patti Hewitt, Corey Friar, TJ Hobson, Kim Hobson, Leah Hobson, John Hanson, Aleshia Gregson, Dorothy (DeeDee) Hanson, Brittney French, Alex Hanson, Lucas Hanson, Justice Dodson and Lucian Hanson. Great grandchildren include Nathan Hanson, Bellamy Hanson, JM Moore, Ellie Moore, Austin Buffalo, Sarah Hewitt, Sadie Jade West, Sophia Grace West, Max French, Maddie French. In addition, he was a father figure to many more.
Though he was awarded a ROTC scholarship to Annapolis, his father had hopes he would become a preacher and so he attended Freed Hardeman College. He instead studied engineering and started a lifelong career in the process industry. He worked for Humko in Memphis in the 60s, Riceland Foods in Stuttgart Arkansas in the 70s (where he was also a City Alderman, the Vice Mayor and Police Chief at various times) and then moved back to Memphis in 1980 to work for the VRC Company. Later he co founded and worked for Star Control Services, Inc.
He was an avid pilot and owned a few planes that are still flying (one at a flight school where it is used to train new pilots). He loved SCUBA diving and golf. He and Lola went to the Bahamas so often that they were given honorary citizenship. One of his favorite things was fishing with his buddy Rick. He attended White Station Church of Christ and assisted his brother Charles in the Cambodian class.
Visitation is from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Family Funeral Care at 4925 Summer Ave, Memphis, TN 38122. The service is at 2:00 pm, with interment to follow at 3:30 pm at Memphis Memory Gardens at 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Rd, Memphis, TN 38134. Lyle Hendrix will lead the service.
The family would like to thank his roommate at Quince Cicero Muhammad Falls, III (for always looking out for him), Quince Nursing and Rehabilitation, and Crossroads Hospice for the care they gave to Herrold.
