

The sun rose on Houston D. Traylor a native of Memphis, TN, in Como, Mississippi on May 16, 1931, to James A. Sr. and Stella (Hunt) Gault. Houston was committed to living life to the fullest. He is known as an honorable, hospitable, fine gentleman and “classy” dresser who was very devoted to his church, family, friends, and service to country. Houston was everyone’s “Daddy” and “Uncle”. He was a faithful member of Greater Middle Baptist Church.
Following his primary education, Houston was drafted into the military, reaching the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC), E-7. SFC Traylor (retired) was a decorated Vietnam Veteran that received the Army’s Commendation Medal for Outstanding Meritorious Service and 2 bronze stars after 20 years of military service. Houston also retired after 21 years of Federal Service at the Defense Logistics Agency, Defense Depot Memphis, TN.
In 1974 Houston was one of three men who founded the Military Retirees of Tri State Area (MRTSA). MRTSA supports veteran causes, churches, and civic organizations. Houston served as president for MRTSA and advisor for many years. MRTSA also formed the only predominately African American Post, Dr. R. Q. Venson Post 11333.
In Oct 2013 Houston was the recipient of the distinguish Stone Award, Edward O. Cleaborn Hero Award, given to outstanding and caring individuals who have served in our armed forces.
Preceding him in transition were his parents, James A. Sr. and Stella Gault, wife of 59 years, Ruby C. Traylor, daughter Lavern Miller, brothers James A. Jr., Charles H. Sr and Miles C. Sr Gault and grandchildren John Conard, Robbijon Miller and Joyce Hill.
Houston leaves to cherish his memories, sister, Eleanor Gault, three grandchildren: Tony Conard (Fatima), Ruby Conard, and Lenora Bowles. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews and countless other family and friends. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Traylor-Barber Scholarship Fund of MRTSA. Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Thursday January 6th at Greater Middle Baptist Church 4982 Knight Arnold Road, Memphis, TN 38118.
