

Hugh L. Anderson, Jr. died Sunday just a few hours shy of his 95th birthday. He was born in Paris, TN on October 29, 1917 to Hugh and Mattie Anderson. The family soon after moved to Memphis. Hugh had a distinguished music career highlighted by playing with the Memphis Rotary Band in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. He later formed the Hugh Anderson Orchestra and played numerous dances, cotillions and parties in the late 1930’s. In 1937 Hugh began a long career with Buick Motor Division and at his apex was National Car Distributor. He retired from the corporation in 1974 and went to work with a Buick dealership in Atlanta, GA until 1992. During his time of service in WWII, Hugh met Amy Dennstaedt and they were married in January of 1945. In 1997 Hugh and Amy returned to Memphis to live after a 41 year absence. He was active at St. Luke’s Methodist Church and its Stewardship Class. Amy died in 2003. Hugh is survived by his brother, Milton R. Anderson and his wife, Lorraine of Memphis; daughter, Penny Carroll and her husband Richard of Winder, GA; son, Larry Anderson of Memphis; granddaughters, Katherine Bush, Geraldine Lewis, Tammi Thompson; five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. The family wishes to thank the kind people at Apple Grove and Ashton Place for their professional and loving care of Hugh during his illness. The family request memorials be sent to St. Luke’s Methodist Church or The Church Health Center. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 1 from 5-7 pm at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens on Poplar Avenue. A graveside service with U.S. Army honors will be at 1 pm on Friday, November 2 at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on Forest Hill Irene. A reception will follow at the family home.
