

Inez ‘’Shug’’ Thompson Bailey left this earthly home the morning of Saturday, December 28, 2013. Preceding her in death were her parents Minnie and Lafayette Thompson, her brother Murriell Thompson, her sister Ruby Pepple and her twin Ionia (Trixie) Nelson. Inez was born in Alabama, moved to Mississippi and finally settled in Venice, FL, where she grew up. She was a graduate of Sarasota High School. She married her high school sweetheart O.M. (Mack) Bailey in 1937. They moved to Lake Worth Florida where they had two children, Faith and Joel. The family then moved to Tulsa, OK in 1959 where Mr. Bailey was in the petroleum business. She became very active in the community, serving on the board of the Tulsa Children's Home and volunteering with the Red Cross. She also studied and became a certified Grapho-analysist. In 1965 the family moved to Memphis and Inez was again involved in the community. She served as Tennessee State President of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and also as President of the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities. She also served on the board of Deneuville Heights School for Girls. Inez traveled extensively and was an avid tennis player. She was a member of Cedar Creek Racquet Club in Cashiers, NC and the Racquet Club of Memphis. She enjoyed gardening and always said, “I never met a flower I did not like.” She is survived by her daughter, Faith Barcroft; grandson, Paul Barcroft (Susan); great-grandchildren Lillian and Mac Barcroft; her son, Joel Bailey (Lisa); grandaughter, Nina Bailey, and eight nieces. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Inez Bailey Scholarship Fund c/o The P.E.O. Foundation 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa, 50312, or the donor’s choice. We thank all who have been a part of her life and for those who have cared for her these past months. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Second Baptist Church, 4680 Walnut Grove Road on Saturday January 4 at 11 a.m. Visitation at 10 a.m.
