

James Floyd "Pete" Greer died Wednesday, June 24, 2015, after a short illness. He was born on December 7, 1927, in Horn Lake, MS, the only child of Benjamin Floyd and Winnie Qualls Greer. Pete was nicknamed at an early age and was known by that nickname all his life. He was a graduate of Whitehaven High School (Class of 1945) and played football at Tulane University his freshman year of college. Next came a stint in the army, and Pete was stationed at Camp Gordon in Augusta, GA. Settling in Memphis after his army service, Pete and his wife, Pat, raised their family while Pete earned a degree in Business from Memphis State College and later a law degree from Southern College of Law. Following his graduation from MSU, Pete worked as an independent Texaco distributor serving clients throughout the Mid-South area. He had an equally enjoyable second career later in life at Memphis Light Gas & Water, serving both as head of the Claims Department and as a staff attorney before retiring in 2006. Pete was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Louise "Pat" Greer. He is survived by four children: Janet (Frank) Pitts; Jennie (Tim) Altstadt; Jamie (Bob) Celmer; and Jim (Terre) Greer. Four grandchildren will also miss him: Stephen and Sarah Pitts and Jordan and Jessica Celmer. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday June 27, at ten o'clock in the morning, with the family receiving friends for one hour prior to service time, all at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue. In lieu of flowers the family requests gifts in memory of Mr. Greer be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
