Kent Wunderlich was born on October 29, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee. Kent graduated from Memphis University School in 1966 and obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1970 with a Major in Business Management and B.S. in Commerce. He obtained his Juris Doctorate in 1973 from Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review.
Kent joined Baker Donelson in 1973 and became a partner in the commercial real estate section of the law firm. In 1987, Kent joined what is now Financial Federal Bank, a Memphis based community bank, as General Counsel. For 39 years, as both General Counsel and eventually CEO and Chairman of the Board, Kent dedicated his career to the growth and evolution of the bank. Kent epitomized Financial Federal’s relationship-based approach and was seen as everyone’s partner with authenticity, wisdom, and an uncanny wit. Indeed, his colleagues at Financial Federal became an extension of his family.
Kent loved Memphis and lent his talents to the boards of several charitable organizations in the Greater Memphis community, including Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, the Boys and Girls Club of Memphis, Neighborhood Housing Opportunities Inc., and the Nature Conservancy of Tennessee. Kent served on the Memphis University School Board of Trustees for 25 years, including 9 years as Chairman. He also was a member of Lambda Alpha International Land Economics Society, Memphis Bar Association and Memphis Society of Entrepreneurs.
Nothing was more important to Kent than his family. Kent was a loving husband to his wife Susan for 56 years and is also survived by sons, Gary and Philip Wunderlich (Julie) and his grandchildren Gary, Madison, Philip, Libby, Kate and Bonnie along with a brother Bill (Jean) of Memphis and sister Robin Williams of Vero Beach Florida. He is preceded in death by his parents Al and Marge Wunderlich
