

Lt. John William Kiss (US Navy Retired), of Memphis, Tennessee passed away July 11, 2016; he was 95. Lt. Kiss was born on November 12, 1920 in Newark, New Jersey to John and Emily Kiss. He was a student of Newark College of Engineering before enlisting in the Navy during WWII, where he served his country for twenty-two years. Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked as a civilian instructor at the Memphis Naval Air Station in Millington, teaching avionics in support of the 6th fleet. Lt. Kiss was a very dedicated member of Park Avenue Church of Christ, where he served as an elder and the director of education, and was actively involved in the missionary work of the congregation. He was an honest, trust-worthy man known for his integrity and keeping his commitments. He also enjoyed gardening, stamp collecting, and modeling with his vintage Lionel electric trains. He is survived by his wife of nearly seventy-two years, Mrs. Gladys Kiss. Also surviving Lt. Kiss are his sons, John David Kiss (Anna), Richard Douglas Kiss (Linda), and David Barry Kiss (Denise), his brother, Richard Carl Kiss (Helen), his grandchildren, Sean Kiss (Bridget), Devon Kiss, Ashleigh Kiss, and Alex Kiss (Rachel), and two great-grandchildren, Josiah and Jordan Kiss. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 15, from 12:30 until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial contributions be sent to Park Avenue Church of Christ Mission Fund, 5295 Park Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee.
