

MARTIN “Marty” MARVIN ROMINE, born March 1, 1925, in Governador, New Mexico, died peacefully of natural causes on Friday, October 26, 2012. Martin was born to Floyd and Grace (Knopp) Romine. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Della, Kenneth and Ethel, and niece, Karen Barden. Marty is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Shirley Hartman Romine, his daughter Corynne Romine, his sister Grace Romine Hayes, four adored grandchildren, Emma Romine, David Romine, Joseph Romine, and Ian Reed. He was a beloved uncle to Jo Anne Cox, Carol Malone, Shirley Bringle, Linda Brown, Rodger Romine, and Jim Hayes, daughter-in-law, Michelle Mascaro, and brother-in-law of Doris Van Hooser. Marty proudly served in the U.S. Navy in WWII. He drove PT 149, landing troops on Okinawa. Upon honorable discharge, he attended the University of Missouri and graduated with a degree in agriculture. After graduation, he came to Memphis and worked in the cotton industry. He then began a long career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the Board of Standards for cotton grading. He was especially honored to travel many times to Egypt where he assisted in establishing Egyptian cotton grading standards. He made many friends there and particularly enjoyed learning about the different culture. At home, Marty was a Deacon at the Union Avenue Baptist church. His faithful work included teaching Sunday School, the Prison Ministry and the Mission congregation. Marty was known for his willingness to lend a hand whenever needed. He was also an active member of the Gideons International where he passed out Bibles and assumed other duties. Visitation will be held Friday, November 2, from 5-8 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Ave. Homegoing Service with Military Honors will be Saturday, November 3, at 10 a.m. at Union Avenue Baptist Church, 2181 Union Avenue.
