Mary Alice Rainey (known by all as Babe) of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at home. She was born in Newark, New Jersey, March 6, 1947. Babe graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1965 and married James Douglas Rainey. She was very active in the Cub Scout and Boy Scouting programs in the old Northeast District of the Chickasaw Council. She led many Day Camp programs, chaired Council Pow Wow
events, attended Wood Badge training, and gave great encouragement to both boys and adults in their Scouting life. She loved the Scouting program and got her entire family involved. Babe carried all she learned in scouting to her job at Memphis Pathology Lab at Baptist Hospital where she led a merry band of young people for over a decade. After leaving Baptist Hospital in 1993, Babe worked as a medical assistant for Dr. Herman Crisler until 2016. Her greatest joy was taking care all of the babies and children and watching them grow up. And all of them knew that at the end of their visit with Dr. Crisler they got to get a treat out of Babe’s basket. Babe also enjoyed spending her time as a Eucharistic Minister for Holy Spirit Catholic Church visiting the elderly in area nursing
homes. She would spend time getting to know them and loved hearing their stories.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Alice Stima and her in-laws, JW and Elizabeth Rainey. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth Stima O’Brian of Durham, North Carolina, her husband James Douglas Rainey and her children Jim Rainey, Michael John Rainey and Alice Rainey Berry and her
grandchildren Steven Russell, Christopher Rainey, Alex Berry, Grace Berry, Reece Berry, Sandra Paris, Zeus Rainey, Samuel Rainey and Solomon Rainey.
A Funeral Mass, said by Father Al Kirk, will be held for Babe at 10 a.m., Friday, October 13 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Babe will be laid to rest in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Bolivar, Tennessee. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org. Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Ave
has charge.
