Mat Lipscomb, 92, went home to be with the Lord August 11, 2016 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born November 4, 1923, to Mathew W. Lipscomb Sr. and Nannie May Lipscomb in Robertson County, Tennessee where he grew up in the community of Coopertown. His brothers Jesse, Clarence and James and sisters Mary Ruth, Margaret, and Gladys predeceased him. After college at the University of Tennessee he served his country as a Navy Fighter Pilot and Lieutenant Commander in the World War II era and into the 1950's in the Naval Reserve as a flight instructor, test pilot and air show performer. He met the love of his life Sylvia Doris Fortune of Memphis and they were married on April 16, 1950- A marriage that gave them two sons Mat and Jeff, two daughters-in-law Cindy and Sharla, and five grandchildren, Rainey, Lacey, Jesse Anne, Rachel, and Walker- All residents of Desoto County, Mississippi. Mr. Lipscomb co-founded Lipscomb & Pitts Insurance in Memphis in 1954 and served a term as the President of the Professional Insurance Agents of Tennessee and was once recognized as its Insurance Agent of the Year. He was a regional and national leader in that industry serving and chairing many Insurance Company Advisory Boards and Councils. He enjoyed a lifetime of serving on various local boards including The Methodist Hospital Foundation, Wesley Senior Ministries, and as a Founding Member of Wesley Meadows Retirement Community in Hernando. He was chosen many times as a delegate to the United Methodist Annual Conference. Mr. Lipscomb had a passion for his Lord, his family, his career, and his hobbies of hunting and fishing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hernando United Methodist Church at 1890 Mt. Pleasant Road, Hernando, MS, 38632, (662)429-6826. The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to everyone for their prayers and loving support during these past difficult months, and Lifepointe Village for their attentive care. The visitation will take place at Memphis Funeral Home at 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN between 4-7:00pm on Sunday, August 14th . The Memorial Service will take place at Hernando United Methodist Church- 1890 Mt. Pleasant Road on Monday, August 15th at 10:00am. The burial will occur immediately thereafter at Hernando Memorial Park at the corner of Magnolia Drive and East Oak Grove Road.
