Melanie Elaine Grimes

Melanie Elaine Grimes, age 78, passed away peacefully at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, on September 2, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Born on January 3, 1946, in Memphis, Melanie lived a long, long, full life filled with joy and love.

Melanie was the daughter of Alvin and Helen Hurt, who preceded her in death. She was the eldest of four siblings, sharing a close bond with her sisters Janet Stegall (Walter Stegall), and Carolyn Ross (Eddie Ross). She was also preceded in death by her younger brother, Marlin Hurt, as well as by her cherished husband of over 50 years, John Grimes, whom she married on January 12, 1968.

A proud alumna of Humes High School, Melanie graduated in 1964, where she was an active member of the ROTC. Known as a social butterfly with a sassy personality, Melanie loved to dance, especially to Rock and Roll music, which she enjoyed alongside her husband. Her love for life was evident in her passions—she was an avid photographer, capturing countless weddings and events, and she adored her work family at Sears Crosstown, where she worked in accounting.

Melanie was a true collector at heart, with an eye for the finer things in life. She collected jewelry, clothes, and cookbooks, though she didn’t cook much herself. She found joy in nurturing her plants and had a special fondness for family reunions with her cousins.

A lifelong Elvis fan, Melanie was thrilled to have seen him perform live in concert, an experience she treasured deeply. Her adventurous spirit shone brightly through her love of travel, particularly on cruises with John, as they explored the world together.

Melanie’s warm and infectious spirit will be missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories that will forever live in the hearts of her family and friends.

A visitation for Melanie will be held Friday, September 6, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Ave, Memphis, TN 38122.
