Born on October 17, 1963 in Columbus, MS. Melecia lived a life centered around compassion, hard work, and love for her family. She dedicated much of her life to caring for others—whether through her work as a caregiver or through the countless ways she supported family, friends, and neighbors. Her kindness, patience, and gentle strength touched everyone who was fortunate enough to know her.
To her family, she was “Mawmaw”—the heart of every gathering, the maker of everyone’s favorite comfort food, and the steady hand who always seemed to know just what to say. She was known for her independence and determination, living life on her own terms and finding joy in simple, meaningful moments.
Melecia is survived by daughter Kimberly Bennett (Julie); former son-in-law, Shane Hooks; grandchildren Bailey, Lauren, Carlie, Ellie and Isabella Hooks; siblings George Dink O’Brian Jr. (Denise), Lynn Edwards (Jim), and John O’Brian who will carry her love and lessons with them always. She was preceded in death by her parents George and Betty O’Brian and Mark V. Swedbergh. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by her former husband and lifelong friend, Danny Bailey, whom she dearly loved since their high school days; special friends Steve Simmons, Glenda Griffen, Kate; and her beloved cat, Cleatus, who was always by her side each day watching over her.
A celebration of her life will be held on November 4, 2025 at Double Springs Baptist Church, with visitation beginning at 11:00am.
Those who knew Melecia will remember her independence, her resilience, and her deep love for those in her care. She taught by example—showing that kindness is strength, and that love, when shared freely, is the most lasting gift of all.
