Patricia Dunbar Selden passed away peacefully after an illness last Saturday at the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville. She was surrounded by her children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Commander Claiborne Taylor Selden, and her parents, Curtis and Wilbur Dunbar. She leaves behind three children who loved her dearly: Patricia Anderson (Kirk), of Orchard Park, NY; Taylor Selden (Desiree), of Huntsville, AL; and Clai Selden (Cathi), of Germantown, TN. She was a very proud grandmother to nine grandchildren: Mallory, Madison, Trey, Hunter, Hailey, Dane, and Adam. She spoke of them often and loved to hear of their accomplishments.
Pat was born in San Antonio, TX, graduated from Alamo Heights High School and then Southern Baptist Hospital Nursing School in 1957. Upon graduation, she moved to Wiesbaden, Germany to work as an OB nurse. There she met the love of her life, Claiborne Taylor Selden. Instantly they knew ‘This is it’ and married six months later. His career in the US Navy kept them on the move and they lived in Chapel Hill, NC; Monterey, CA; Glenview, IL; Brunswick, ME and finally Memphis, TN where they settled in Scenic Hills subdivision in Raleigh and stayed after his retirement in 1974.
She was a devoted mother of three, juggling time at swim meets, soccer practices, room mother duties, and many other activities to support her children. She spent many years volunteering for the American Red Cross, and Ascension and OLPH Catholic Churches.
While she will be sorely missed, the family is glad that she is no longer in pain and is reunited with her loving husband.
Pat was a six-gallon donor to Lifeblood and the family requests that in lieu of flowers to please send donations to Lifeblood or to the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House where she received excellent care.
Visitation will be held at Memphis Funeral Home at 5599 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38119 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday, March 31st. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 1st at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 8151 Poplar Ave Germantown, TN 38138.
