Paul Duncan Leitch, 63, died unexpectedly of natural causes while at home on August 12, 2013. A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 24 at 5 p.m. in Memphis at Buntyn Presbyterian Church, followed by a memorial service at 6 p.m. at the same location. Paul was born on June 24, 1950, in Three Rivers, Michigan, the son of Duncan and Eunice Leitch. Although he went on to live in four states and travel to more than 50 countries, he never lost his love for Michigan. Many of his fondest memories were of days spent swimming in the lake and playing in the apple orchard where he lived as a child. Paul graduated from high school in 1968 and thereafter earned a bachelor’s degree from Grinnell College, a master’s degree from Florida State University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Memphis. Over the years, he worked in human resources, practiced law and taught college sociology classes. While teaching on a U.S. Navy base in the Philippines in 1979, he met his future wife, Soledad Alip. They married in 1980, and through the years, helped many of Sol’s siblings immigrate to the United States and build lives in the Memphis area. Being a father meant the world to Paul. He loved spending time with his children, Duncan and Sally, reading books, exploring the Memphis Zoo and attending dozens of softball, soccer and basketball games. As they grew up and pursued careers in neuroscience and business, he could barely contain his pride in their achievements. Paul also loved his pet dogs, Motown music, running in races and Peeps candy. He was a shopper, often in search of gifts for others. His shelves were overflowing with books and old CDs. Thoughtful and generous with an unusual sense of humor, Paul was famous for sending special books, cards and surprise packages to family members. Preceded in death by his mother who died just one week before him, Paul is survived by his wife,, Soledad. Her love sustained him through many difficult times. Survivors also include his children, Duncan Leitch and Sally (Jared) Woodruff; three siblings, David Leitch of Peoria, IL, Brian Leitch of Golden, CO, and Carol Leitch Fries of Superior, CO, as well as many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Paul’s name to the Memphis Zoo, any research or charitable organization addressing physical or mental health issues, or Buntyn Presbyterian Church, Memphis, TN.
