Sandra Thayer, 85, of Memphis, TN and formerly of Millington, TN passed away Saturday September 14, 2024 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. Sandra grew up in Memphis and graduated from Humes HIgh School. She was a dutiful Navy wife and a faithful Christian and was very devoted to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as other family. During her career she managed a 7-11 Store, was a cosmetologist and was in the US Civil Service as she worked as a secretary on the staff of the Chief of Naval Technical Training at the Millington Naval Air Station. She was an administrative assistant and director of the new parent support group at the Navy Base for years. She was always involved in many activities of service to others while on the Navy Base, including organizing weekend events for the Boy Scouts. She was an active member of First Baptist Church-Millington.
Preceding her in death are her husband Paul Thayer, US Navy-Ret., as well as her two sons Greg Howard and James “Les” Howard, her sister Betty Jo Davis, and her nephew Jeff Davis. Sandra leaves her life partner Don VonBuskirk, her granddaughters Kathryn Minton (Les) and Selena Howard and her grandson Joseph Howard. She leaves four great grandchildren, including Ollie Hedrick and Ella Minton as well as Kendric Howard (Kaylee), and Brianna Howard. She leaves two great great grandchildren, including Braxton Lucas Howard and Stetson Baylor Howard. She also leaves her brother Larry E. Lawrence (Pat) and her niece Lori Catherine Williams (David), as well as her three nephews Larry Charles “Chuck” Lawrence, Walter Scott Davis (Stephanie) and Ricky Davis (Sherry). She also leaves her best friend Wanda Mayer, of Iowa.
A visitation for Sandra will be held Sunday, September 22, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Ave, Memphis, TN 38122. A funeral service will occur Monday, September 23, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, 4925 Summer Ave, Memphis, TN 38122. A committal service will occur Monday, September 23, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at Memphis Memory Gardens, 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Rd, Memphis, TN 38134.
